Pink Tutu Time Travel: Post #23 – November 11th, 1921: The Rise of The Flapper and My Darling Tutu

Hello lovelies, darling readers, darlings, darlings, darlings! Emma here, your very own Pink Tutu Time Traveller, ready to whisk you away on a dazzling trip back to 1921, the year that saw the rise of the fabulous flapper and, if I may say, the perfect era for my dear, precious, pink tutu!

November 11th, 1921! The world still feels like it's slowly shaking off the dust of World War One, but a new energy is pulsating through the air, a vibrant, electric energy that smells faintly of gin, jazz and, of course, pink!

Before I gush about my tutu, let's take a peek into the world of drag and theatre in this shimmering year!

London: On November 11th, 1921, the brilliant Charlie Chaplin's “The Idle Class” was hitting London theatres! Can you imagine?! A whole night dedicated to that glorious mustache, the comedic genius and, well, perhaps not tutus, but maybe a little more movement?

But hold your horses, darling, because just down the street in Soho, a little "private club" called The Monico is stirring. This is the heart of London’s underground scene. I hear it was absolutely teeming with drag performances! Imagine: feathers, boas, and sequins shimmering under dim lighting – how glamorous!

New York: Across the pond, New York City is sizzling! The legendary Follies, boasting gorgeous costumes and brilliant performers, are thrilling audiences night after night. Did you know that in this very month, the famous Ziegfeld Follies were showcasing Josephine Baker? Can you imagine a dancer more fabulous than a ballerina in a pink tutu? I wouldn’t have missed that show for the world!

But even outside the spotlight, the world of drag is bursting. I’m hearing whispers of fabulous private gatherings, and hidden performances tucked away in cafes and speakeasies. Remember, dear darlings, in 1921, drag was considered quite the scandalous business. But like my fabulous tutu, the true joy is in the hidden gems!

Now, about my darling tutu: As you know, darling readers, my tutus are more than just fabric and fluff. They are portals, time machines, vessels for dreams. And my newest pink tutu, which is an absolute dreamboat by the way, took me straight back to 1921!

It was an era of revolutionary change! The Flappers were shaking off corsets, rocking short bobs, dancing the Charleston and smoking with their hands on their hips! What a wonderful feeling it must have been. Just like how I feel when I wear my precious tutu, liberated, joyous and completely myself!

The 1920s are often called the "Jazz Age." You could say, dear darlings, that tutus are the ballet age! They are expressions of elegance, strength and boundless grace! I can picture a dazzling flapper stepping out onto the dance floor in my dazzling pink tutu!

This tutu of mine is an embodiment of the spirit of the 1920s: rebellious, bold, and unafraid to shine. I felt so in tune with the women of this era, especially those women who embraced their individuality. They were all a little bit sassy, a little bit daring and totally captivating. Just like the glamorous ladies who show up for my drag performances!

Of course, my adventure wasn't just about the dance floor! I spent hours scouring vintage shops and fashion houses. The 1920s style! It was simply dreamy!

Just imagine the decadent, silky fabrics – chiffons, satins, and velvets, so soft and billowing! The colours! Exquisite pinks, deep blues, and golds, perfectly highlighting the vibrant femininity that was exploding through the social scene! And speaking of pink! My pink tutu fits right in! It’s like it’s been transported straight out of a flapper’s dreams!

And who could forget the hats? Oh, those delightful, glorious hats! It was like a symphony of feathers, silk flowers, and even exotic fruit, just perched atop beautiful, liberated hairstyles. It’s no wonder I'm always adding more fluff and embellishment to my precious tutu!

You know what I did? I snagged a beautiful pearl necklace and an Art Deco hair comb. They’re a touch of vintage glamor for my next drag performance, and they remind me of the energy and fashion boldness that makes 1921 such a fascinating and thrilling year!

As I slip my time traveling tutu back on and prepare for my return, I just can’t help but smile. This journey is reminding me of the beauty of every generation, of the sheer brilliance that emerges in all forms of expression and that the spirit of my tutu – like drag – transcends the boundaries of time and culture!

Stay tuned next month when I reveal my time traveling experience for my blog readers. Maybe a peek at a performance or a special visit with someone legendary in drag history, perhaps someone in this very year, or maybe somewhere farther in the past or the future? The world is waiting to be explored in pink and fluffy glory, darlings! Until next time!

Love,

Emma
