Hello, my darling dears! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here with another dazzling entry from my Pink-Tutu time travel blog! This month, my pink tutu and I are whisking you back to July 7th, 1924. Can you believe it? Almost a century ago, but let me tell you, darling, the drag scene was still just as vibrant and fabulous then!
Now, before we begin, you all know how much I adore a pink tutu. It's like a wearable fairytale, darling, but it's not just a fashion statement for me. My pink tutu is my time travel ticket. You heard me right, my loves. When I slip into this dazzling pink confection, my magical tutu takes me wherever and whenever I fancy, all thanks to my trusty stash of time-travelling pixie dust.
This time, the pixie dust carried me to the roaring 1920s. Can you imagine? Jazz music filling the air, flapper dresses swishing about, and a whole heap of flaunting fabulousness. My fellow dragsters, the energy here was absolutely electrifying!
So, let's delve into the what’s on in 1924, and discover what was hot in drag that glorious summer!
The Rise of Vaudeville
Right then, darling, back in 1924, Vaudeville was where you found drag at its best, really captivating audiences. We're talking a wild mix of comedians, singers, dancers, and of course, our dearly beloved drag performers, all rolled into one dazzling show! These drag performers weren’t shy about owning their persona, their creativity and individuality. This period of history really showcased the incredible evolution of drag from the early 20th century and you'll see how much of this artistry carries through to our time.
Showmanship & Theatricality:
Imagine those grand stages with twinkling lights and the roaring applause. These were truly captivating performers and each drag artist had their own stage name, costume and act to dazzle the audience. Back then, you were limited to local performances unless you were truly remarkable. Drag was beginning to develop, but this was a golden age for its roots and for truly creative and dazzling shows. We can only imagine the glitz and glam of those old-time drag performances and these early showpersons set a powerful precedent for future generations to build on.
Glamour & Expression:
In this decade, women were expressing their liberation, and so was drag, baby! It wasn't all feathers and sequins, darling; it was also about being bold and beautiful. From flapper-inspired looks with shimmering embellishments to dramatic make-up techniques, these artists pushed the boundaries and redefined gender norms. It's about time, darling! Drag queens and kings back in this decade had their unique and stylish way to communicate their individuality and they never backed down from it! This is definitely a style I plan to experiment with when I make my next trip to the Roaring Twenties.
Beyond the Stage: The Street Shows!
Drag wasn't confined to the grand stages back then, darling! Think about it. It's that spirit of community, of wanting to spread the fabulousness. There were street shows in full swing, giving a whole other flavor to the entertainment scene. Just picture a bustling marketplace or a street corner with a few dragsters and some good old fashioned song and dance. Think of those fabulous singers and drag dancers showcasing their amazing talent for those on the street. Those moments on the street had to be dazzlingly theatrical! This is one of the highlights of drag, the energy that permeates not just in theaters but on the streets! We can learn from those old shows as it makes me appreciate drag and performance so much!
A World of Glamour:
And let's not forget the fabulous fashion! While my heart always belongs to my pink tutu, I couldn't resist trying out some of those glamorous flapper dresses back in 1924! Just a bit of a historical costume change, darling. Oh my goodness, those sequined dresses and drop-dead gorgeous hats were an absolute dream. And, of course, I couldn't resist stepping into a glamorous, art deco inspired club! The feeling of it, the music, the dancing and the glamour. The whole era truly embodies creativity and individuality. And what is drag if not the art of personal expression and embracing creativity!
Time-Travelling Tip: If you ever happen to travel back in time, my darling, be sure to pack a feather boa and some fabulous dancing shoes. Trust me, you'll fit right in. And you know how much I love a sparkly headband!
