Hello my darling dears! It's your girl Emma, back from another fabulous time travel adventure, straight from the year 1930, wearing, of course, a fabulous pink tutu that could give the Royal Ballet a run for its money! Oh, darling, the time-travelling is absolutely knackering, you know! Jet lag is no joke when you're whizzing through time, darling.
This month I landed in 1930, a year buzzing with energy and whispers of the new decade! Let me tell you, darling, fashion was already shaking things up! Just picture it: flapper dresses with dropped waists, cloche hats perched upon chic bobs, and all the glamour you can handle. I just knew I had to grab myself a pair of feather boas, and honestly? The 1930s love for feathers and fur was right up my street! Imagine a big boa like a pink plume around the neckline of a floor-length pink silk dress...divine! Oh, I can just see it!
Now, 1930 wasn't just about fashion. It was the year a lot of amazing performers took to the stage! This year saw Josephine Baker, the legendary drag queen, performing on the world stage, enchanting everyone with her talent and sheer presence. Can you imagine the stage presence? Absolutely legendary, darling! It was just the start of her remarkable journey. I mean, can we just take a moment for the costumes?! Those shimmering feathers and sequins⦠pure perfection! I bet even the dancers from the Moulin Rouge would have given her a standing ovation. I have to admit, it inspired me to whip up a little routine ā letās call it āJosie's Jungle Jamboree!ā Oh, Iāve got so many great costume ideas for it, from leafy skirts and feathered headdresses to animal prints and sparkling gems. My time-travel pink tutu is, of course, perfect for that final dramatic pirouette!
Speaking of sequins, did you know 1930 was the year Marlene Dietrich donned that legendary suit with a bow tie that set fashion hearts aflutter? I tell you, those sparkly sequined costumes are just so⦠well, FABULOUS, donāt you think? We just HAVE to be looking glamorous all the time, and she did it better than anybody, my dear. It was the start of her amazing career and those costumes really brought her to life! Just goes to show that good costumes can change the world⦠just saying!
Of course, there was no social media back then ā they were lucky to even have the radio! Imagine a life without a drag queen Insta account? No cute photos in our favourite tutusā¦shocking! Honestly, darling, a big part of my job, the one that keeps my time travelling tutu sparkly, is putting on a drag show here in good old Derbyshire. My "Time Travelling Tales of a Pink Tutu" performance is truly fabulous! And my drag sisters from the local cabaret circuit and theatre venues join me, sharing stories from all the decades they've visited and bringing a touch of vintage glam to our county town.
Of course, I love going out to shows. Drag has certainly evolved, hasnāt it? The drag scene in Derbyshire has gone through phases over the years. Back in the 70s, it was all about glam rock and platform shoes. But these days it's about embracing diversity, with queens from all backgrounds and styles making their mark on the stage. I remember that show a couple of weeks ago at The Derby Arts Centre! I mean, the drag queen was doing death drops that had the whole audience gasping! Honestly, those looks were totally fabulous! But the energy and inclusivity are just as strong as it was in those earlier times, which is just lovely. It makes me feel truly proud.
The world of drag has come a long way, but one thing's for sure ā itās about expression and bringing a bit of joy and sparkle into our lives! We all need to embrace our inner fabulousness and embrace life with as much glamour and glitter as possible! You know, itās all about expressing ourselves. Why not wear your own pink tutu? Go on, make it a reality, Iām sure itāll bring you a bit of joy and cheer! And that's exactly what we need in the world! So here's to our amazing drag queen history, to the performers who blazed the trail, and to embracing all forms of creative expression, be it feathers, sequins, or, dare I say it, a good olā fashioned pink tutu!
Catch you all next month, darling dears!
Lots of love,
Emma, Your Pink Tutu Time Traveller
xx
