Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire-born, pink-tutu-clad, time-traveling drag queen extraordinaire! Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com - the only website on the interweb dedicated to the glorious history of drag, and to getting the world into tutus, one pink frill at a time.
July 7th, 1943, you say? Oh, darling, you're in for a treat! Today's date is a veritable drag-tastic dream, so pop the kettle on, grab your best pink cuppa, and let's travel back in time in this fab pink tutu of mine!
London Calling!
As you can see by the calendar on my glittery time-travelling desk, we’re jet-setting straight to London. You see, darling, a bit of historical digging revealed a little jewel on July 7th, 1943 - a drag extravaganza at the iconic London Palladium. And who was on the bill you ask? The legendary *Julie, a lady of the stage with a reputation for being *extra, and an exquisite fashion sense to boot! ** Julie, it appears, is known for putting on shows that are equal parts glamorous and comedic, with costumes that were the envy of the theatre. Oh darling, my fingers are positively tingling with anticipation!
Just imagine, a glittering hall bathed in the warm glow of spotlights, the audience in their finest attire, and then, on that grand stage, Julie in a gown the colour of rubies with feathers that would rival the most exquisite peacock! It was the sort of performance that sent the rumour mills into overdrive, that people would gossip about for weeks, and that I, as a modern-day drag queen with an undying thirst for all things glamorous, would do ANYTHING to see!
Wartime Glamor
Now, I know what you're thinking, "Wartime? Couldn't be glamorous!". Oh, darling, let me assure you, glamour is timeless! Even in the midst of wartime, people still wanted to feel special, to escape from the hardship. Drag was a way to escape, to let loose, to celebrate individuality, even in the darkest of times. Imagine a world in which a dazzling pink tutu could transport you to a different place, even just for a couple of hours, isn’t that absolutely fabulous?
The 1940s were a time of change in the drag world. In some ways, the wartime context provided a sense of artistic freedom and innovation. Because many performers were conscripted into the war effort, women began to dress and perform as men. It was the start of a new wave of gender-bending theatrics! This new, inclusive environment opened doors for incredible talent and gave rise to bold, rebellious performances - which were the essence of everything that I hold dear about drag!
From the Palladium to the Streets!
While London's Palladium is definitely where the action was in 1943, darling, let's not forget that the real energy of drag lay in the streets. Drag performance didn't solely live in grand theatres; it existed in pubs, dance halls, and on every street corner. Imagine: a performer in a shimmering sequin top and a vibrant pink tutu dancing on a crowded London street corner – a sight I can only imagine to be the height of glamorous rebellion. This, I think, truly embodies what makes drag special!
Think about it: street performers in vibrant colours, defying the austerity and boredom of wartime - that is, in my opinion, nothing short of revolutionary! They'd be pushing boundaries, bringing a touch of glamour to the otherwise dull routine, reminding people that despite the darkness, a spark of joy still existed.
Shopping for 1940s Glamour
Before I take off in this pink tutu to chase after Julie and catch her act at the Palladium, darling, let's imagine the world of fashion and shopping during the wartime. We know that supplies were scarce, but that doesn't mean the London ladies didn't try to turn heads! They used whatever they had, repurposing old clothes into something completely unique.
Just picture those inventive dressmakers creating ingenious and flamboyant looks from rationed materials! They would use recycled fabrics and repurposed jewellery, and wouldn't let any single detail slide! Those women made glamour out of nothing!
Pink-Tutu Dreams of the 1940s
Right now, as I'm writing this, I’m just bursting with the excitement of seeing Julie on stage, imagining those sequined gowns, and the feathered hats - it all sounds so captivating. Julie's performance in a war-torn city must have been a powerful moment. And for me, as a time-traveling drag queen, it's a powerful reminder of drag's resilience and its ability to unite people in laughter, celebration, and, above all, glorious glamour!
And on that note, my dears, I’m off! The time travel is calling, and this pink tutu is ready to shimmy straight to London to see Julie for myself! And darling, I'll be back here soon, brimming with exciting news about this night of drag-tastic adventure at the Palladium! Until then, wear pink, embrace the tutu, and keep those glamorous spirits soaring!
Yours truly,
Emma, your Pink Tutu Time Traveler
