#DragQueenHistory - 3rd March 1967: Tutu-ing Through Time!

Hello, my darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller, and welcome back to another fabulous #DragQueenHistory post! This month, we’re twirling back to the 3rd of March 1967, a day bursting with camp, creativity and enough glitter to make a disco ball blush!

As you know, my darling divas, my love for drag knows no bounds. From the glitter-soaked stages of London's West End to the flamboyant parades of New York's Christopher Street, I've sashayed through decades of drag, all while rocking my signature pink tutu (with matching feather boa, naturally!)

It's time to unleash the magic, lovelies, and whisk you off to a fabulous day in history. Grab your feather boas, slick on your lipstick, and prepare to be transported to the glorious world of drag!

Now, on this particular 3rd of March, the world of drag was ablaze! In the bustling city of London, the legendary "Gay Liberation Front" was kicking off. You heard that right! This ground-breaking group, known as the "GLF," was taking a stand for queer rights and challenging the traditional views on LGBTQ+ lives. Talk about pioneers, right?

It’s so important to remember those who fought for the freedom we have today, to be ourselves, love who we love and express our fabulous selves in every possible way. As the GLF marched, they shouted out for social justice and visibility for the queer community - it was a powerful statement and a game changer. And it reminds me just how much has been achieved for us to express our true selves so freely.

Imagine, the GLF would later host protests against homophobia, organised dance-ins, and championed equality and justice. They truly paved the way for the vibrant and accepting drag scene we know and love today.

But hold on, the story doesn't stop there! Let's hop over the Atlantic, my dears, to the United States, where the fabulous world of drag was also on the move!

New York was the heartbeat of the drag world, especially Greenwich Village, where a drag performance at The Village Gate, titled "The Queen's Greatest Hits", was attracting a diverse and glamorous crowd! Oh, my! The idea of a drag performance specifically dedicated to showcasing the queen’s talent - truly a marvel! Imagine the applause, the laughter and the joyous atmosphere!

On this day in history, the world of drag was ablaze with both protest and celebration. And I couldn't be prouder to see these icons paving the way, even if I was still just a glint in a crystal ball in 1967.

As I’ve twirled my way through the decades, one thing that hasn't changed is the power of drag. Its ability to entertain, to challenge norms, and most importantly, to spread a message of love and acceptance remains as potent as ever. And in my humble opinion, what better way to embrace the world’s vibrancy than with a bright, beautiful pink tutu? It's a statement of joy, it's a celebration of self, and it's just plain fabulous!

I must admit, being able to visit 1967 with my magic time-traveling pink tutu is quite a delight! But this travel requires a lot of glitter (and an even bigger bank account). How do I afford this extraordinary life, you may ask?

*Well, my dear lovelies, my trusty pink tutu isn’t the only thing that's travelled through time! It turns out that a passion for drag translates into quite the lucrative career! *

You see, between my trips through the past, I dedicate myself to the stage, delivering fabulous performances at venues across Derbyshire, from cosy pub shows to glittering club events! Yes, you could say I'm a bit of a drag-preneur!

Every month, my performance earnings help me travel through the pages of drag history and bring those tales to life right here on www.pink-tutu.com!

Oh, and by the way, I'm quite the fashionable fiend, if I'm being honest. I do adore scouring vintage stores for rare finds to add to my growing costume collection. Every sequin, every feather, every spark of glitter, makes for a fantastic moment on the stage! Plus, you know, what better way to appreciate history than by embodying it?

Now, I know you love a little bit of fashion insight, my lovely lot! So, what were the queens sporting in 1967?

You're in luck, because we're going shopping! This year, bold colors and sharp tailoring were all the rage! Think sequins and sparkles, and think BIG! A dramatic eye-catching hat and a statement wig were the icing on the cake of any dazzling 1967 outfit!

But there’s more to being a pink-tutu-loving historian than just dazzling costumes and incredible drag performances, you know. My true mission in life is spreading the joy and beauty of the pink tutu. And it starts with you! I challenge each and every one of you, yes, even you, to rock a pink tutu, be it for a night out, a special occasion or just because! Let's make the world a more glamorous and joyous place, one pink tutu at a time!

I'm off to continue exploring the glittering timeline of drag, but for now, remember, be fabulous, stay sparkly, and most importantly, let your pink tutu fly high!

Don't forget to check out next month's #DragQueenHistory post - you won't want to miss it!

Until next time, darlings!

XOXO, Emma
