Pink Tutu Time Travel: March 3rd, 1973 - Blog Post #639

Oh my darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, the blog that proves history is fabulously camp and even more fabulously adorned with a good old-fashioned pink tutu! Today we’re turning the clock back to the glorious year of 1973, and it’s oh, so delicious.

My fabulous pink tutu twirled me straight to March 3rd, 1973 – just imagine the sass! It was a Saturday, and the world was about to get a big, pink, glitter-infused dose of drag history!

Remember, darling, this blog is for anyone who dares to dream, sashay and shine! No matter if you're from Derbyshire, like myself, or across the pond, this is the blog where the drag queen inside can finally blossom! Now, let's get down to business...

On The Drag Scene - A World Away… But Not Too Far From Us!

You won’t be shocked to hear that on this very day, there was a plethora of amazing drag events happening! Imagine it, darlings, every drag queen, king, and non-binary performer had their chance to shine and leave a little glitter magic all over the world.

San Francisco: My, oh my, San Francisco is always a dragtastic haven! The iconic Cockettes were ready to dazzle with their captivating show! These were the queens of avant-garde performance, combining performance art, vaudeville, and camp theatricality - just dreamy!

New York: The scene was buzzing in New York City with a little something called The Cockettes. Yep, these revolutionary, campy drag pioneers were making waves. They weren't just performing; they were challenging norms with their fierce creativity. Imagine sparkles, rainbows, and a healthy dose of drag magic – absolutely delightful!

London: Even across the pond in London, our darlings, the London Cockettes were holding their very own dazzling shows. Just imagine all the glamour, the theatrics and, yes, you guessed it – a hefty helping of pink tutus, oh, the magic!

But wait, there's more!

On this very same day, another incredible drag artist, a trailblazing pioneer by the name of Divine (also known as Glenn Milstead), was getting ready to create iconic moments. Yes, he's the fabulous drag legend behind iconic movies such as “Pink Flamingos" - now there's a true drag queen story for the ages. Talk about fabulous! Divine pushed the boundaries of drag to make a bold statement – and isn't that what it’s all about, darlings?

It was truly a magnificent day in drag history – so much to be proud of and remember, my darlings.

The History of the Pink Tutu, In 3 Easy Steps

For our new-to-drag darlings out there – a bit of a pink tutu education.

  1. The Origins: Tutus have their origins, my darlings, in 18th century, during the Romantic period of ballet – yes, those flowing, graceful creations with their layered tiers were originally ballet costumes.

  2. From Ballerina to Drag Queen: You already know, of course, that we’re not just any old history enthusiasts here at Pink Tutu Time Travels - we adore all the history, and particularly, the pink tutus! It wasn’t until later in the 20th century, that the pink tutu really became iconic in drag!

  3. The Queenly Connection: Tutus gave a drag queen a chance to transform and truly become the glamorous characters they dreamed of embodying! They weren’t just costumes; they became symbolic representations of a glorious transformation. And it goes without saying - we're all for a bit of fabulous transformation, right, my dears?

So Where Will Your Pink Tutu Take You?
