Hello darlings! It’s Emma, your favourite time-travelling pink-tutu wearing drag queen extraordinaire, and I am just dying to tell you all about my latest adventure! This month, I whisked myself off to a glorious 1970s wonderland – July 7th, 1975, to be precise!
Imagine a world where disco was king, platforms were queen, and every look screamed “more is more!” It was absolutely fabulous, and trust me, dear reader, my time travelling pink tutu was the perfect outfit for such a glamorous era.
So, naturally, I had to hit the streets and find out what was hot in drag back then. Let’s just say it was all about the show. Forget our current era’s Instagram filters and perfectly sculpted snatched looks. Back then, it was about live performance – a whole experience!
The iconic "Cockettes" in San Francisco were smashing the drag scene. Imagine a mixture of vaudeville and psychedelic punk rock with a heavy dose of flamboyant fashion – that's the Cockettes. It's truly legendary, darling, and a must-see in their prime.
Speaking of smashing, did you know there were female impersonator drag balls popping up everywhere? The “Gay Liberation Front” was holding its annual festival in New York City, and with the whole community gathering to celebrate their individuality, you can bet there were drag queens gracing those stages.
Now, I wouldn’t be a proper drag queen without indulging in a bit of shopping, would I? That 1970s fashion scene was divine! It’s the era of big hair, disco pants, and enough glitter to cover a whole galaxy. Oh, and those platforms, darling? They are everything. You’d think the heel on my time-traveling pink tutu was high, but these platforms take things to a whole other level!
Of course, no trip is complete without witnessing some fabulous performances! I snuck my way into a drag show, and let me tell you, the energy was electric! Imagine a whirlwind of sequined costumes, fabulous feather boas, and fierce lip-syncing to Donna Summer. Talk about giving us life!
This era of drag, while less focused on the perfect face beat we all know and love today, was about community, celebrating individuality, and defying norms. It was raw, it was loud, it was pure passion – and it absolutely had me wanting to twirl and spin until I could spin no more. It’s not always about the makeup, but the passion for self-expression that brings that extra pizzazz to drag!
If there's one thing I learnt on this trip, it’s the power of performance and self-expression through drag. And to all of my fabulous readers out there: let your freak flag fly, wear the pink tutu, and let your passion be your guide, always!
Stay sparkly and remember: never stop spreading love and fabulousness! Emma xo
