Post #751: A Blast From the Past - July 7th, 1982!

Darlings, welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com! It's Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire drag queen, ready to whisk you back in time on another fabulous journey!

This month, my magical pink tutu has whisked me back to July 7th, 1982, a glorious era of leg warmers, big hair, and, of course, fabulous drag! This date was particularly juicy, darlings, with exciting events unfolding across the globe. Grab a glass of something sparkly and let me tell you all about it!

Now, imagine this - you're in New York City, strutting your stuff down the streets, wearing your most fabulous attire. That's the scene that unfolded for the brave and beautiful drag queen, Sylvia Rivera, a pioneer for transgender rights and a beloved figure in the drag community. Imagine her incredible bravery, darlings! This was a time when LGBTQ+ individuals faced fierce discrimination. Sylvia Rivera’s fight for acceptance and equality is an inspiration to us all, paving the way for the incredible drag scene we have today!

Back in England, darlings, London was bursting with glamorous, exciting drag performances! You could catch some of the legendary queens at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern. That place was practically a drag queen haven in the 80s, and was one of the main places for the London drag community to congregate. They also had some absolutely fantastic cabaret performers, and the atmosphere was pure electric, darlings! I've seen some pretty incredible shows in my time, but that place must have been an absolute delight to be at, don't you think?

A Trip Through Time... in Pink, of Course!

So, while we're on the topic of glamour and history, let's get down to the nitty-gritty: What was fashion like in 1982? You could barely walk down the street without encountering a massive neon pink statement piece, darlings. Leg warmers, leggings, high-waisted everything, and of course, those giant shoulder pads. It's the era of fashion where bigger is definitely better, just like my love for pink tutus! And believe me, the bolder, the brighter the colour, the more it popped! And the more I adore it!

In 1982, the world was full of glamorous people who embraced individuality and weren't afraid to express themselves. This is something that continues to inspire me today, as I try to empower others to find their inner confidence and express themselves through fashion, art, and most importantly, drag!

And who says history can't be trendy? I can't get enough of this time period for fashion, with its vibrant colours and wild designs, it’s no wonder this period of fashion is experiencing a big resurgence these days. Even I love getting decked out in some leg warmers and a crop top and letting my inner 1980s goddess shine.

Speaking of fashion and glamour, darling, there's another big fashion event I had to check out - Paris Fashion Week! Those Parisian catwalks were full of extravagant outfits with huge frills and exaggerated silhouettes - all the things we love, of course. A dream, really!

And what about those accessories? Don't get me started on the hats! We're talking bold hats with even bolder colour combinations, perfect for a truly eye-catching statement! And the jewelry? Forget small and delicate, darlings! This era demanded statement jewelry!

And guess what, darling, this entire month has been a pure joy! I've been performing at so many drag shows and events across the world, meeting amazing queens and soaking up all the glitter and fabulousness. You know I wouldn’t miss it for the world.

One of the highlights of the month was seeing one of my favorite queens, Divine, take the stage at a cabaret club. Now, she was a drag legend, and a pioneer for camp and comedy! I just had to go and witness the magic!

*And of course, my blog readers, this month has also seen an amazing resurgence of my campaign, "Pink Tutus for Everyone!" I saw more pink tutus on the streets than ever before - a wonderful sight! * It makes me so happy seeing so many people embracing the beauty and power of a pink tutu!

So there you have it, darlings. My little time-traveling journey has once again reminded me that drag, and the history of it, is about more than just makeup and fabulous outfits. It's about challenging the norm, celebrating diversity, and spreading joy and creativity in a way that inspires us all. And my pink tutu will be waiting for you, whenever you’re ready to join me on another adventure, in time! Until next month, darling!
