Post #860: A Tutu-ful Trip Through Time: August 1991, Darlings!

Hello, my gorgeous glittery ghouls! Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad time traveller, and oh my goodness, August 1991 – talk about a glamorous trip! Honestly, it’s a real head-spinner – this is definitely going on the ‘Must Visit Again’ list, for sure! I popped back in my pink magic time-tutu to discover the drag scene in August of 1991, and I gotta say, you can’t beat the magic of that era. Think a heady mix of classic drag cabaret and the bold, defiant energy of a new wave.

Let’s grab some sparkling grape juice and dive into this delicious bit of drag history…

From Derbyshire with Love – A Touch of Pink in the Air

Remember how I mentioned August 1991 was a whirlwind? I was so excited to experience this fabulous moment, and I must say, my dear, you couldn’t catch me if you tried. This time I found myself back in a quaint theatre in my lovely home county of Derbyshire. Oh, how my heart did flutter – imagine it, a drag show in the countryside! This little gem was put on by some local queens who called themselves The Velvet Divas. Imagine if the Spice Girls met with the Andrews Sisters and threw a wild party – that’s the energy these ladies radiated. Now, the fashion? Magnificent! So much bright color, tons of tulle and some sequins that could rival a disco ball! They even managed to work in some amazing floral details and hats, oh darling, absolutely breathtaking!

They definitely weren’t afraid to push the boundaries, my dears. They were celebrating drag and all the beautiful expressions of gender and artistry that comes with it – the world was in shades of pink, glitter, and just pure unadulterated fun!

Onward to New York City – A Night at The Pyramid

Now, listen close darlings, I can’t let you down without giving you a little peek at New York City. That place is a Drag Mecca, so a visit was absolutely in order! I was lucky enough to snag a seat at a hot spot called The Pyramid Club. Can you imagine a giant building shaped like, well, a pyramid, dedicated to everything Drag! You couldn’t escape the bright lights, the thumping bassline, the incredible performances! Think Studio 54 with a dash of London’s 1970s glam-rock scene and you’ve got the vibe of The Pyramid!

Some iconic Drag Queens like Lady Bunny were at their peak of their game during this time, pushing boundaries, making people laugh, and reminding us that we could be whoever we want to be – fabulousness unleashed, I tell ya!

Fashion, My Dear, Fashion

Honestly, I have never felt so inspired by all the dazzling costumes! So much velvet, lace, feathers and sparkle – they embraced every color under the rainbow with an emphasis on shimmering golds, silvers, and the most spectacular reds you could imagine.

Let's take a moment for the beauty that was a staple during this era – the bouffant, my dears! These majestic hairstyles were nothing short of epic. Think enormous curls, gravity-defying towers of hairspray – pure diva drama at its finest! They added a dramatic, almost royal air to any queen who rocked them.

The Big Apple's Biggest Drag Shows

It was so important to see what New York’s biggest Drag Queens were up to. It just so happened that August was a busy time for these queens, and I can't thank the pink tutu enough for allowing me to have front-row seats at a variety of performances, especially a few at a new club that was really making its mark on the scene - the club called “Splash”!

The Scene is Alive

Now, you may not think August 1991 seems that far back, but my darlings, this time felt like a magical moment – one full of so much excitement for Drag. It really solidified this notion that drag was breaking through – becoming mainstream. People were celebrating the joy of expression through artistry and fashion, and these brave individuals in their stunning costumes were showing the world what it meant to be authentically oneself!

It reminded me that even when the world gets a bit too much, even when things feel a little grim, a touch of pink tutu and a dose of dazzling drag will always help remind us to shine a little brighter and be our own glorious selves.

Time to Make it Pop

Now, darlings, that's all I’ve got time for this month! Let me know what you think in the comments, tell me your favourite part of this month’s travels and don’t forget, wear pink whenever you can. We need a sea of pink tutus to make this world a little brighter, don't you agree? Until next month, stay glamorous and fabulous. Love, Emma!
