Pink Tutu Time Travels: #DragQueenHistory 1997 04

Post Number 928

Hiya darlings, it’s Emma here from Derbyshire and welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com for your monthly dose of drag queen history and some fabulous fashion tips. Let's grab a cuppa, maybe some cucumber sandwiches and dive straight in!

This month, my sparkly time traveling tutu whisked me back to April 1997, oh what a time it was! Just the other week I was traipsing about London town, the buzz of theatre lights, the sizzle of "I'm a little teapot" (yes, you heard that right! The camp classic had a comeback!) and I bumped into Divine’s Divine Trash Can. It’s still quite a popular place with the drag divas here, darling. Remember that? Those divine ladies at the Royal Court Theatre (the whole place felt absolutely ‘Royal’) I’ll bet you do, they just don’t forget about Divine’s fabulous trash can.

April in London: A Month of Drag Delights

I arrived in April ‘97, London’s a big city even for my fabulous pink tutu, I got completely disorientated trying to find 'the' place to be – you know that bar everyone’s in – but all the drag shows and happenings were in the West End, darling. I don’t need a map when the energy from the scene pulls you right to where the action is. I am pretty sure I left a fabulous pink sparkly tutu footprint in my wake, though, that was pure coincidence (pink goes with everything). It is definitely the colour of spring, after all. And with a bit of luck, I left some fashion tips along the way! I love giving advice - its part of my duty as a drag queen and my love for all things pink tutus and fab fashion!

Anyway, back to London! I was here to find out what all the buzz was about - what was everyone going bonkers for?! They all said “Boy George! He's back, baby!” Everyone was talking about this ‘Boy George Returns’ special, everyone, that is, except this gorgeous drag queen with the fabby pink tulle tutu in my pink sparkly wake. I thought she might know! “Of course it’s a must-see,” she chirped, “a huge reunion of the culture club - but you haven't heard about this year's fabulous “International Transsexual Festival? Now, that's something for the diary!”

I am so grateful that I was able to soak up this legendary event, I’m not sharing a date - but trust me, the International Transsexual Festival is a drag queen time traveler's dream, darling! The music! The dance! The outfits! The joy on the faces, it all just warmed my heart, you’d have loved it. This is when you truly feel you're a part of something bigger than you - a global celebration! They also said the festival gave London ‘a bit of a splash of New York’.

My travels didn't stop there though - from London I hopped to Berlin and into the world of The House of Travolta. You’d have loved this drag and dance house darling – think disco-infused performances that had me tapping my feet! The energy was electrifying! This is the type of show that keeps me time traveling – oh to experience these incredible talents at their peak. My darling, it was a riot of colours and high-energy routines, I just couldn’t keep still.

After my exciting Berlin adventure, my pink tutu time travelled back to America! Oh my goodness! April in NYC! This is the place to be, the scene just pulses with drag history. Now the question is - which club to choose! “Go to Boy Bar in Greenwich Village, it’s absolutely popping this week” – a drag queen friend said with a wink - and who am I to question her! It’s always such fun when the scene tells you what to do. The performances, the music! This is how you spend your time if you love drag queen history, and don’t forget to make time for shopping and the fabulous Drag Ball at the end of the month - my pink tutu just couldn’t wait. Oh darling, it was fantastic - every single outfit made of paper - this is drag performance at it’s absolute best.

My Favourite Finds in NYC

It just so happened I ran into the gorgeous Amanda Lepore, what an outfit, my darling! A dress made entirely of glitter, absolutely stunning - Amanda Lepore, you're just so fabulous! And that time traveling pink tutu is all thanks to her - because while I was looking completely enraptured in Amanda’s incredible outfit she asked me about mine – of course darling my fabulous pink tulle time traveling tutu is not a normal everyday thing! She said something that stayed with me and I love saying it to this day “It's not just an outfit, darling, it's a story”.

So much fun with that amazing sparkly tulle tutu but it was back to England to share what I had learnt about drag in April ‘97 - I have a lot to say to my blog and that’s because April in NYC was pretty much ‘everything!’ You would be so pleased with this, darling! Oh the sheer fabulousness - from those amazing fashion looks in Boy Bar to all that stunning Drag Ball paper couture to that legendary Amanda Lepore! The excitement is still bubbling, even in my tutu time travels – even after so much fun and travel and sparkly pink tutus I knew my journey would continue because - in drag queen time travels you get more than you bargained for - and a whole lot of love and ‘the joy’ of all the amazing artists who put themselves out there! I know this is going to be one of those months I want to re-live again - and, darling, that is quite something coming from a time traveling drag queen! I must be going now – it's nearly midnight, time for this tutu to sleep! I need to catch those early morning dreams of that Amanda Lepore, paper ball gown couture and all things drag! But most of all I need to dream about what will be the fabulous new adventure for this time traveling pink tutu, a story yet to be written !

Till next time - you stay fabulous.

XOXO, Emma
