Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travels, your monthly dose of all things drag history, fashion, and, of course, pink tutus! Today, my lovely readers, we're diving into the exciting world of drag in March 2031, a period packed full of spectacular shows, dazzling fashion, and a general explosion of everything fabulous. So grab your best pink tutu (a la the one I'm rocking as I type this, courtesy of a magical pink feather boa that conveniently doubles as a time-traveling contraption. You wouldn't believe the adventures you can have with a good boa! ) and let's take a whirl!
This post is numero 1335 on www.pink-tutu.com (my beloved digital home!), so if you haven't already, be sure to subscribe and catch up on all the glamorous history we've been serving up!
Now, on to the highlights! 2031.03 saw drag blossom on a truly global scale, reaching audiences beyond what we could ever have imagined just a few decades ago. It was a thrilling time to be a drag enthusiast, with shows popping up everywhere, from the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the cobbled alleys of old Dublin.
Drag Goes Global! One of the biggest stories in drag this month was the global explosion of DragFest! It all kicked off in the heart of Derbyshire, where, let's be honest, the love for drag is second to none (that's where I come from, after all, so I have to brag a little). But then it took over the whole world! You had festivals celebrating drag art in Mumbai, drag musicals on Broadway (think "Hairspray" meets "RuPaul's Drag Race" and you've got a flavour!), drag competitions in Prague, and drag runway shows in Rio. It was absolutely insane!
But wait, there's more! One of the big highlights was The Queen of the Galaxy Drag Pageant. Think Miss Universe, but with wigs and sparkles! Drag queens from every continent, wearing space-inspired looks, were competing to become the Queen of the Galaxy, all with a heavy dose of humour, talent, and those fierce high-kicks you love to see. The show ended with a mind-blowing performance featuring holograms of the winning Queen in all her glory, surrounded by celestial fireworks. (Imagine it! I know, incredible!). It made a few news headlines, to say the least.
"This isn't just entertainment," declared the reigning Queen of the Galaxy in a post-pageant interview. "It's about embracing who we are, shining a light on diversity, and inspiring young people everywhere to embrace their authentic selves!" And with those words, she stole the hearts of billions across the globe. I know I shed a happy tear myself.
The Art of Drag & It's Ever Evolving FormNow, let's talk fashion! This era was about taking those tried-and-true drag elements - rhinestones, wigs, fabulous shoes, oh yes - and putting a new spin on them. Think bold colours, edgy street-style influences, and a real emphasis on expressing a Queen's own personal style. Gone were the days of drag as a homogenous thing. Drag Queens everywhere were expressing their unique voices through their looks.
Take The London Drag Extravaganza for example, which was basically a catwalk of artistic brilliance! From traditional drag with a modern twist to a truly avant-garde "Drag X The Metaverse" segment (Queens in their most fantastical creations, projected onto huge digital screens!) it was pure visual delight. It reminded everyone just how adaptable drag art really is, a truly fluid, vibrant and captivating art form!
My Drag Journey Through The Month of MarchOf course, how could I be anywhere near such incredible events and not indulge in a bit of personal time-traveling exploration? This month was all about the personal journeys of drag for me! I touched down in Paris in 1920s to see the birth of the Drag Ball. Remember, those decadent, theatrical, glamorous, utterly beautiful events with their costume themes, inspired by theatre, and high-society extravagance, that formed the backbone of so many drag shows? These events were just blossoming, and the energy was palpable!
I then took a short trip back in time to Victorian England. You would think drag queens in such a "staid" era wouldn't be found! But in the heart of London's hidden theatrical back-alleys, a thriving drag scene was burgeoning in its underground form, complete with all its hidden underground taverns where secret drag shows would be held. Just like drag continues to thrive across all eras.
Later, I was whisked back to the dazzling glitter-strewn halls of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, but in the year 2031! You have no idea how amazing it is to experience the ever-changing world of Drag in Art exhibitions! The Met dedicated a whole wing of their museum this month to "The Legacy of Drag." It was an absolutely mind-blowing collection showcasing everything from vintage costumes worn by drag icons to contemporary performance art pieces inspired by drag. It was just…magical!
As I wrap this blog post up, it makes me so proud to witness the immense global impact drag has had and will continue to have. Every month brings a new story, a new chapter in drag history, and it's our collective job to continue telling these tales, sharing the passion, the humour, the creativity, the beauty, and, of course, the pink tutus!
And always remember, my dearest readers, as long as you’re feeling confident and fabulous in that pink tutu, the world is your oyster! See you all next month, same time, same place!
Stay fabulous! Emma xo
