Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, your fabulous pink tutu wearing guide to all things drag!
Can you believe it's 2032 already? Time really does fly when you're having a ball in a sparkly pink tutu, doesn't it? But as always, it's not just about the sparkle. I've been itching to talk about drag history, and where else would a pink tutu-clad time traveler land but the grand, glorious, glittery year of...wait for it...2032!
This month, my magic tutu took me on a whirlwind trip through the decades. Now, you might be thinking, 2032? That's just around the corner! But remember, darlings, we are not limited by linear time.
My first stop was 1969, just in time to see the groundbreaking drag balls in the Stonewall Inn, New York. It was a time of seismic change, where drag was an act of rebellion, a roar for liberation and acceptance. Can you imagine the guts it took for those pioneers to defy norms and express themselves with such courage? We have so much to be thankful for.
Next, I went to the '70s. Drag in the '70s, like a disco ball, was pure joy and a joyous expression of life. It was also a time of fabulous, flamboyant looks that redefined the fashion of the time. The flamboyant costumes and the exaggerated hairstyles, they just scream '70s Drag to me!
The 80s were no slouch either. The '80s gave us the glorious era of performance art. From San Francisco to London, we had groundbreaking drag artists challenging the boundaries of art, sexuality and expression, breaking taboos, using drag to make important statements, not just on stage but on a social level, using their art to influence change. Drag was not just entertainment, it became a platform for powerful statements.
But the fun wasn't just confined to America! It’s not fair to forget about Europe. Drag has a vibrant history in the UK, and in 2032 we’re finally starting to see drag becoming the fashion statement for everyone. Yes, you heard me right! This is no longer an exclusive club, babes, it’s a movement for every man, every woman, everyone who dares to wear their true selves!
On a recent trip back home to Derbyshire, England, I even caught the show "Drag-n-Roll" at a local community theater. And, my dears, it was magnificent! The costumes were over the top, the humor was biting, and the performance was everything a fabulous drag show should be!
Don’t be fooled though. Just because drag has become mainstream doesn’t mean it has lost its edge. We are a diverse community, you know. While I may be partial to a pink tutu, I’m obsessed with how many of you embrace every style imaginable: from glamorous queens to edgy queens, from those who slay with hyper-femininity to those who subvert traditional gender norms with every step on stage. We have it all!
Speaking of subversive, I've just got to mention the incredible drag king scene that's blooming in 2032. Kings are bringing a powerful blend of masculine energy, creativity, and humour to drag. Their performance style often mocks stereotypes about masculinity. I saw an incredible show called 'Kings Of The Court’ just last week in New York. And let me tell you, my dear reader, the level of detail, the attention to detail, and the artistic interpretations on masculine dress... it was phenomenal!
But back to the point: in 2032, drag is, as it should be, for everyone! No matter who you are, what you identify as, where you come from, everyone has the right to be seen, heard and celebrated for the unique expression of themselves! It's exciting to be part of a movement where everyone is encouraged to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and power of self-expression. The more diverse we become, the more diverse our art, our entertainment, our community.
But there’s still a long way to go. As much as we're embracing the mainstream, let's never forget the challenges drag has faced. We are a powerful force, and it's our job to ensure everyone in our community feels empowered to stand up for themselves and for each other.
To everyone who's inspired by our journey through drag history, whether it's the rebellious energy of the Stonewall era, the dazzling lights of disco drag, the sharp wit of '80s performance art, or the beautiful diversity of drag today, I say thank you. You’re making history right now, with every sparkle, every step, and every fierce expression of who you truly are!
Remember, darlings, every day is an opportunity to strut your stuff! Don’t be afraid to put on your pink tutus, get those feather boas ready, and take center stage. There’s nothing that can stop you!
