Christmas Ballet in 1905

Pink Tutu Post #14: Christmas Ballet in 1905, Oh My Darling!

Ahoy, my lovely Tutu Tribe! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveller, and it's almost Christmas! I'm buzzing, literally, as I've just had a wonderful trip to the most delightful Christmas ballet in 1905 โ€“ it's seriously giving me serious Nutcracker vibes (more on that later!), and oh my, I've got so much to share!

As we all know, Christmas is the most magical time of the year โ€“ twinkling lights, cosy nights by the fire, yummy treatsโ€ฆ and, of course, ballet! Christmas ballets have always held a special place in my heart. There's just something so charming about the snow falling softly, the stories of fairies and toys, the twinkling lights that seem to shimmer just like a dancer's costume... it's a whole vibe!

And so, let's take a trip back to the Edwardian era, 1905, a perfectly chic time to experience Christmas ballet, darlings. As I stepped into the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in London โ€“ donning my finest pink tutu, of course โ€“ I felt a shiver of excitement. It was like being transported into one of those vintage Christmas postcards, filled with warm tones of gold and crimson. And wouldn't you know it, the ballet "Cinderella" was on stage. Imagine: a gorgeous fairy tale spun on the stage, with waltzing princes and beautiful glass slippers, just begging to be admired.

The stage itself was adorned with exquisite details, giving a true Edwardian vibe with its romantic, fairy tale touches. Picture this: elaborate set pieces, painted backdrops of snow-laden castles and moonlit forests, with a splash of glistening silver and white โ€“ divine! You could practically smell the frost and the pine! It's amazing how beautifully they recreated that Christmas spirit.

The dancing itself was captivating โ€“ the grace and fluidity of the corps de ballet in their flowing tutus, the power and passion of the principals. But it was the costumes, oh the costumes! Oh my, they had me swooning. Long, graceful, full skirts โ€“ think of that elegant Victorian silhouette โ€“ accented with delicate details, ruffles, lace, and sequins. Each colour so rich and sumptuous, blending beautifully. Think emerald green, ruby red, midnight blue โ€“ simply delicious for the eyes!

After all, nothing shouts โ€œfestive spiritโ€ more than gorgeous, sparkly costumes! And if you're a true Tutu Tribe member like myself, you know itโ€™s essential to wear a dazzling costume that pops, even on Christmas Day. Imagine all the festive photographs in your glamorous pink tutu โ€“ I do love a classic pink with some sequins. And the added sparkle is totally in keeping with the joyful vibe of Christmas ballet.

Back to 1905: imagine my excitement when I noticed some ladies sporting lovely beaded bodices and silk gloves. These intricate, fine details added a touch of luxurious sophistication, as did the delicate feather fans โ€“ such a beautiful symbol of the era. Oh my, it was a time for true elegance and beauty โ€“ I'm so in love with the sheer artistry of it all!

You can imagine, my darling Tutu Tribe, that the ladies in the audience were equally fashionable. They donned beautiful gowns with fine details like bows, ribbons, lace and jewels, and stunning hats that were just bursting with festive elegance. Just imagine the scene! All these ladies decked out in their finery, shimmering jewels and colourful feathers adorning their hats, enjoying the delightful Christmas ballet, such a delightful spectacle.

There were more delights than I could shake a tutu at โ€“ some amazing dancing, incredible costuming, and just the right touch of Edwardian elegance. What a brilliant trip!

And now for a spoiler for all you Tutu Tribe Christmas ballet aficionados! The year I was at the Drury Lane Theatre, another big-time, legendary Christmas ballet was premiered.

Yep! It's our absolute favourite - "The Nutcracker". It debuted that year, and you know what? It still has so much magic to this day. Imagine all the amazing costumes, the sugar plum fairy, the magic, the stories of Christmas โ€“ pure ballet magic!

And if you want to capture the essence of that "Nutcracker" magic this Christmas, let me tell you - there are so many incredible costumes available now โ€“ we're talking beautiful ballet dresses in every colour you could imagine, each one more dazzling than the last. So get those ballet shoes and those pink tutus ready โ€“ you can bring all the magic home!

So darlings, let's embrace this magic of the season, and enjoy all the beautiful dancing โ€“ it's a gift that never ends! I'll leave you with this: dance like nobodyโ€™s watching, and definitely embrace a touch of the pink, as it's not just a color - it's a lifestyle.

Stay fabulous, my lovely Tutu Tribe! I'll catch you on the flip side,

Emma
