Christmas Ballet in 1925

Pink Tutu Post No. 34: A Twinkle of Christmas Past - 1925!

Hello darlings! Emma here, ready to whisk you back in time to a truly magical Christmas, the year 1925. This year holds a special place in my heart (and my wardrobe) as the time when ballet, well, it really started taking centre stage! You can bet your bottom tulle I'll be donning my most sparkling pink tutu to share the joy!

Imagine this, lovelies: December in 1925, London aglow with twinkling lights. The aroma of roasting chestnuts hangs heavy in the air, and even the snow, should it decide to make a guest appearance, sparkles with a frosted charm. But, for me, this time of year holds a particular magic – it’s Christmas Ballet time!

We're not talking about just any ballet, mind you, darlings! 1925 saw a glorious explosion of creative and daring productions. Let me take you through a whirlwind of sparkles and twirls…

The Ballet Boom

In the Twenties, ballet was well, the hottest ticket in town. No, really! London had not one, not two, but THREE ballets running in the West End. Can you imagine, darlings? You had your pick of enchantment!

Firstly, we had the exquisite "The Sleeping Beauty", taking pride of place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. This wasn't just any production either, lovelies, but the magnificent legacy of the great Marius Petipa! With every exquisite turn and sweeping grand jeté, "The Sleeping Beauty" showcased the very essence of the classical ballet.

But that wasn't all. The dazzling "Coppélia" at the Alhambra was sending the London elite into a frenzy. Imagine, dear readers, being swept away by a story of a mischievous doll brought to life! Talk about a whimsical Christmas delight!

Then there was the London Coliseum, with "Le Carnaval", a fantastical ballet filled with swirling dances and charming costumes that, dare I say it, are so incredibly timeless. And here we get to my favourite part, darlings!

A Tutu Explosion

Now, every ballet needs a good dose of glitter, and the 1920s didn't disappoint! I imagine the stage practically lit up, so much sparkle from all the lovely tutus. They embraced both the classical styles, the kind we still wear today, think tulle, tiers of perfect frills, the full romantic dream.

And, of course, we can’t forget about the modern. They embraced a whole new, innovative design in fashion, think shorter, skimpier, fringing, embroidery, the most beautiful art deco inspirations! The dresses of these days, a whole new silhouette! My favourite? The glorious knee length shimmering dresses with dropped waistlines - perfection!

Even the costumes at the Coliseum in their "Le Carnaval" had these modern touches, imagine those lovely dancers, they’d have looked absolutely divine. Can’t you see the colour and textures? The rich silks and velvet sparkling beneath the lights of the theatre. A spectacle for the ages, and an era I adore, a total visual treat, darlings!

A Little bit of Street Magic

Speaking of visual treats, darlings, have you heard of "Street Ballet?" Yes, darling, my favourite thing, a wonderful trend in 1925 where a young and daring crowd embraced ballet as a public, street performance, almost as a dare. Imagine it - these lovely women performing their graceful art against a backdrop of the bustling city. I imagine a beautiful young lady, wearing a striking scarlet tutu, doing grand jetés amongst the crowds on London's bustling streets! Talk about a fabulous splash of colour and dance in an urban landscape.

Now, you can imagine, darling, that all this buzz created a lot of fuss and media attention - every paper seemed to be running an article on ballet! From elegant black and white photos of the London ballet scene to charming little portraits of dancing debutantes. All very glamorous indeed!

Let's Talk Fashion, Darlings

Now, for someone who loves their tutus, there is nothing quite as charming as delving into the fashion of a particular era. Oh, how I yearn to be whisked away to the London department stores of 1925! Think long, shimmering satin dresses for the socialites, perfect for the theatre or a dazzling Christmas gala!

Of course, every proper socialite required the ultimate fashion accessory – the perfect fur stole. I bet you can picture it, lovelies! It adds a touch of drama and elegance, like a wispy, fluffy halo around their heads. You can never have enough drama in your life, darling!

And what would 1925 be without those delightful feathered headbands! Talk about a way to top off a stunning look! Those little sparkling beaded accessories added that final, oh-so-chic touch! It's like a sprinkle of stardust.

My 1925 Style Inspiration

Okay, darlings, it's time to talk about the style of my current inspiration. I have recently become captivated by the 1920s and all of the wonderfully daring things that happened to fashion!

Think soft colours for the modern and decadent colour combinations like emeralds and deep pinks. It's so wonderful, lovelies, this look of modern ballet!

So now you see my new obsession with long beaded chains, the glitzy headbands, all things modern. I may be stepping out with a new look, darlings, so prepare yourselves for a burst of 1920s glamour! You can look out for my pink and gold creations. The more sparkle, the better!

Christmas Memories and Inspiration

So, darlings, 1925 – what a Christmas season for dance and fashion! It is the kind of festive era I just want to slip back into again and again, and for that reason, my heart really feels like it can’t wait to head out, explore this Christmas, maybe go catch a Christmas ballet production or two, indulge in some delectable seasonal shopping… who knows, a glamorous little party may pop up!

As the snowflakes fall and the winter air hangs thick and full of anticipation, I want to encourage you to create your own little 1925 moment, darling!

So don’t be afraid to rock those sparkling embellishments and daring cuts, put on your prettiest pair of stockings and, well, why not get yourself a sparkly pink tutu? The more sparkle, the more fabulous. Remember, dear readers, it's not Christmas unless we’re having a good time with some festive ballet glamour, and embracing those timeless inspirations!

Until next time, my dearest darlings. Let your inner twirling spirit out, enjoy every minute, and always wear your sparkle with pride.
