Hello, my lovelies! Itās Emma, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina, back again with another journey through time!
This Christmas, we're travelling back to the shimmering year of 1960! Imagine - the year Elvis ruled the airwaves, the world was gripped by the Cold War, and my personal favourite - the tutu styles were divine!
Iām slipping into my trusty pink tutu for this one (of course!), and taking you all on a twirling tour through the magic of Christmas ballet in 1960!
Christmas Crackers and Sugar Plum Dreams: 1960ās Christmas Ballet
1960 was a year for magical Christmas ballet experiences, and whatās more magical than a snowy December evening spent at the ballet? As we all know, nothing evokes the true spirit of Christmas quite like the graceful movement of ballerinas. This year, ballets such as "The Nutcracker", which, much like myself, never ages, graced the stage, charming audiences of all ages. Imagine the wonder! Can you imagine little ones peering through their parentsā legs at a ballet that has been performed year after year, decade after decade?
The Tutu Evolution: The Story of a Ballet Dress
Remember those amazing tutus we've seen in old movies? That's what 1960's ballerinas would be wearing, so letās talk tutu styles! Think billowing chiffon, layered tulle, and a plethora of fabulous, fashion-forward styles, adding extra pizazz to these Christmas productions. These stunning tutus are not only functional - helping with breathtaking pirouettes and effortless jumps, but they also brought an air of classic elegance to the stage, embodying that dreamy fairytale world that Christmas ballet has to offer!
Stepping onto the Spotlight: Ballet Fashion in 1960
Ah, ballet fashion! What better inspiration than 1960s trends? Think elegant off-the-shoulder gowns and glamorous high heels for the theatre - what I always like to call my "after the show, go out" style. These garments combined grace with style, creating the perfect mix for those stylish after-show soirƩes!
I love getting ideas for my tutu collection from the Ballet Theatre productions. These performances were graced by dancers like Natalia Makarova who were known for their elegant attire on and off stage, so you can imagine the glorious designs. The designers for ballet in 1960s understood the importance of highlighting a dancer's physique while offering something bold and sophisticated - not to mention those glitz and glamour. Youāve heard the term āballerina elegance,ā but thereās a real story to these garments, a real history, a reason that āballet fashionā is even a term, right?
1960ās Shows: Seeing and being seen!
You know, there was something special about the world of ballet during 1960, an allure and magic that pulled people into theatres, and I believe I've been around long enough to have a clue as to what made this happen! The dance world was alight with the sheer spectacle that made ballet such a favourite social event. Imagine heading out with a beautiful outfit (like those dreamy dresses!) and having that glamorous entrance. What better excuse to indulge in a delectable pre-show dinner or catch a glimpse of your favourite ballerina, then gossip about the performances after over a cup of hot chocolate after the show?!
I love reading the magazine articles from back then! The photos of all the women, always looking so beautifully dressed, tell a real story of this magical time. That excitement in the audiences' eyes for an evening of captivating dancing - just like I have today with each street ballet performance - it's an experience to cherish!
The Heart of Christmas: The Timeless Dance
Just like our tutus, these magical ballet stories endure through time, bringing families together every year for Christmas. I mean, just think, how long have I been in that Tutu for? Forever!! Time passes and changes but these classics are still around. Thatās the beauty of these dance classics, these enchanting tales: they donāt need flashy modern sets to work their magic! This tradition - and the stories these shows tell - is something to admire.
As we approach this Christmas, may each of you find your own little magic as we remember those fabulous Christmas ballet productions, their glamorous dancers, their graceful moves and, of course, their enchanting tutus. So next time you are getting dressed for your own Christmas ballet evening - or even just shopping, like me for more tutus - think about the beauty of those bygone eras.
Remember - Christmas is all about making magic with those we love most. What a tutu-nificent idea to have a bit of ballet magic in our lives ! And, of course, wearing tutus.
Happy Christmas and until next time darlings! Keep on dancing!
