Hello my lovelies!
Welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things pink and twirly. Today's topic, you guessed it, is a journey through time to a fabulously festive Christmas of 1978. And guess what? I'm getting the Christmas spirit just thinking about it!
So grab a mince pie, put on your favourite festive tunes (a bit of Wham! never hurt anyone) and let's delve into the magical world of Christmas ballet in the disco-fied year of 1978.
Now, if you know me, you know I have a deep passion for ballet – it’s in my blood, darling! I have been dancing since I was a little thing. Derbyshire is known for its lush rolling countryside but I discovered my true calling amongst the rolling tutus and leaps on stage.
I’m off on a time-traveling adventure today (thanks to my secret street performances - did I tell you how much I love being the street-style ballerina of the hour?), to celebrate this magical year when it comes to ballet. You might not believe me, but ballet wasn't always the world we know today with "The Nutcracker" performances showing on loop at Christmas. This particular Christmas was very special.
Firstly, you’ll have to forgive my shameless obsession with ballet fashion – it’s a passion of mine. 1978 was the peak of disco style, you see, with sequins, shiny metallics, and a whole lot of flared everything – even on our beloved ballerinas. It's a style we've definitely seen revived in recent years! Think disco glitter sprinkled over a classic tutu and, dare I say, a pinch of glitter on the face – très chic! The world was in love with big, bold statements and it all felt excitingly edgy and just a little bit glamorous, and, dare I say, a bit naughty in the best way.
So let's rewind the tape to Christmas 1978 – it was a time of great change in the world of ballet. Some of my favourites were still on the scene – Mikhail Baryshnikov had the world dancing to his tune with his effortless moves and striking performance. Gelsey Kirkland was also captivating audiences with her elegance and incredible artistry. They were just mesmerising! And of course, Rudolf Nureyev, the legendary figure, was leaving a trail of glitter and artistry everywhere he went!
This Christmas was also marked by a particularly brilliant production of "The Nutcracker," performed by the Royal Ballet, complete with a cast of spectacular dancers who, of course, danced in breathtaking tutus – so fluffy and beautifully designed.
Imagine a night of sparkling magic, twinkling lights, and the scent of roasted chestnuts. Can you smell the sweet aroma of chocolate-covered cherries? It's no surprise it's become one of the most popular ballet productions, especially during Christmas.
My 1978 journey to the Royal Ballet saw not only amazing dance choreography but fabulous fashion in the audience – you've got to remember – these were disco times, darlings! It wasn’t just the ballerinas who were glittering. Imagine the grand hall filled with shimmering outfits, jewels sparkling in the lights – an amazing display of colour and opulence! Just imagining it makes me want to throw a pink tutu over everything. You know me, I love a sparkly Christmas - the more glitter, the better!
But it wasn't all tutus and grand theaters – in 1978, ballet was also venturing out into the streets. There were plenty of public performances of classical and modern dance all over the country! Just like me! My time travelling secret… a sprinkle of sparkle, a whole lot of tutus and you’ll find me dazzling everyone in a big city with a small but sassy dance. You see, darling, I firmly believe in taking ballet everywhere – from the grand theatre stage to the streets – a sprinkle of joy, a dash of artistry. Ballet is for everyone.
Did I mention I had a truly fabulous vintage 1978 style ballet costume find? I will just have to find an opportunity to show it off, darlings, it’s an absolute stunner, pink of course, a full length fluffy tutu that was the envy of all the other dancers (even Rudolf!)!
So as you sip your cocoa, and settle in with a pile of presents, spare a thought for those Christmas ballets of 1978. Let’s not forget the magical spirit that ballet brings, regardless of the decade. A timeless tradition, filled with grace, beauty and a sprinkle of festive joy! And yes, I know that there are very few people who like tutus as much as I do, so my Christmas mission, is to find 10 of you out there who will embrace this Christmas tutu style. A classic, fluffy tutu can instantly transform you from the simple to the spectacular – if I can persuade just 10 people then maybe… just maybe I’m getting closer to achieving my dream – pink tutus for all!
Happy dancing my loves and Merry Christmas!
