Pink Tutu's 100th Post! A Festive Flicker Back to 1991: Christmas Ballet! 🎄✨

Hello darlings! It’s Emma, your pink tutu-wearing, Christmas-loving, ballet enthusiast, and it’s time to whisk you back to the enchanting year of 1991! Get ready for some festive frills, ballet bliss and, of course, some spectacular Christmas ballet performances! 🩰🎄

This blog post marks a very special milestone: 100 posts on Pink-Tutu.com! That’s 100 opportunities to celebrate the magic of dance and everything that goes with it, from glamorous tutus to exciting premieres. And today, we’re dipping our toes into the magic of Christmas ballet.

Back in 1991, the world was abuzz with a sense of holiday spirit. It was the year when Home Alone captivated audiences with its Christmas chaos, and everyone was glued to the telly for the annual showing of The Snowman, a beautiful ballet film based on the picture book. The festive air was definitely contagious! ❄️

As always, I'd popped into London for a bit of ballet shopping. Harrods was an absolute dream, stocked with dazzling sequins and shimmery satins. I even snagged a gorgeous little pink tulle scarf to wear on my festive outing – just the perfect addition to my look! 💖

And what better way to experience the magic of Christmas than with a festive ballet performance? There were several exciting premieres back then that truly encapsulated the Christmas spirit. Let’s take a peek, shall we?

“The Nutcracker” in All its Glory

The beloved ballet, The Nutcracker, remained a Christmas staple back in 1991. Every ballet company across the UK put on a breathtaking show. The magic of Christmas came alive through the twinkling sets, the delightful music by Tchaikovsky, and of course, the elegant tutus, swirling around like snowflakes in a winter wonderland. I especially loved the Royal Ballet’s rendition – the costumes were positively dazzling!

“Cinderella” - A Ballet Classic

And then there was Cinderella. This charming ballet took center stage in December with its iconic glass slipper and enchanting love story. Several theatres put on beautiful performances, highlighting the story's captivating fairy tale elements.

Ballet Fashion in 1991:

Let's talk about fashion. My 1991 Christmas shopping expedition took me to a charming vintage shop on Covent Garden Market. And you won’t believe what I found – the most divine tulle tutu, a beautiful vintage number from the 1950s! Perfect for my festive outings. It's all about the details, and a little bit of vintage sparkle adds such an elegant touch.

There was a definite emphasis on elegance back then. Ballerinas often adorned their buns with delicate, sequined hair combs, and a glamorous swipe of cherry red lipstick completed their Christmas ballet look. For my street performances, I was rocking the ‘90s look with leggings and a black tulle tutu, but with a splash of bright colour, because a little bit of colour goes a long way, right? 💃

Travelling Back Through Time – My Secret: Street Ballet!

Of course, my favourite way to experience ballet is through a trip back in time. I manage to finance all these extraordinary adventures with my favourite side hustle – performing street ballet. You see, a little bit of dancing in the heart of London is a perfect way to transport yourself back in time, experiencing the energy and magic of past eras firsthand.

My favourite dance spots? Trafalgar Square in all its festive glory, or Covent Garden Market with its quaint little stalls. Nothing feels more exhilarating than making a little magic right in the middle of the bustling city. Sometimes, I think about all the different dances, all the costumes and stories they evoke, and the possibility of connecting with the world of ballet throughout history!

A Merry Wish for 2023:

This Christmas season, I wish you a ballet filled with joy, love and glitter. Remember, even the smallest sparkle can illuminate the world with beauty. Perhaps you’ll discover your inner ballerina and grace the streets in your own sparkling creation.

Until next time, happy dancing, darlings! Don’t forget to subscribe to Pink Tutu – the perfect destination for all your ballerina-inspired fashion dreams! 💕
