Christmas Ballet in 1998

Pink Tutu Blog: Post 107: A Glittering Christmas Ballet 1998! 🩰✨

Hello my gorgeous darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Blog, your one-stop shop for all things twirly, sparkly, and festive!

This Christmas, we're taking a trip back in time, to the glorious year of 1998, for a peek at the dazzling world of Christmas ballet. As always, my pink tutu is ready to transport us to a magical land of pointe shoes, glittering costumes, and the joy of dancing under the twinkling Christmas lights.

Let’s set the scene. 1998, the year of boybands, Tamagotchis, and, of course, a festive season brimming with ballet magic! My lovely grandma gifted me the most wonderful pink velvet tutu that year, it had sequined snowflakes, I'd twirl and twirl in that beauty for hours. (My Mum had to peel me off the Christmas tree, she kept mistaking the sequins for decorations). It’s the year that ignited my Christmas ballet obsession!

Now, before we get into the shows themselves, we can’t forget about the glorious ballet fashion. Imagine it, a mix of satin, tulle, velvet, and a generous sprinkle of sparkle, with a healthy dose of vintage flair! Think Nutcracker with its charmingly traditional looks: sugar plum fairies with frothy tutus, mice in elegant velvet, and the imposing yet romantic Sugar Plum Fairy with her glorious ballerina gown. And then there's the Swan Lake, with its elegant swans and enchanting princess in soft, feminine tulle. We’re talking pink, and white a lot of white, with hints of red and gold! I loved to copy the ballet fashion, from the satin and sequins, with some cute little pearl necklaces. I swear I had every colour of satin hair scrunchie, you’d never catch me at the Christmas ballet without the perfect ballet-inspired look.

Oh, and how could I forget the shoes?! Remember, darling, there were ballet flats and ballerina pumps back in '98! And I just loved rocking them to see Christmas shows with my girlfriends. I was pretty sure I owned every colour under the sun. My fave? Definitely baby pink!

And now, let's take a magical trip through some of the iconic shows from the festive season of '98!

First up, the ever-popular Nutcracker, a true Christmas ballet staple. In London, The Royal Ballet was lighting up the stage at the Royal Opera House. And if you were in New York, you might have caught The Nutcracker at the iconic New York City Ballet. Now imagine this: a little girl dreaming of Christmas under the magnificent crystal chandelier of the Royal Opera House – pure magic! The most glamorous thing of the time was that everyone was wearing red. Not like the crimson and burgundy shades you find in most productions these days. It was more of a ruby red, a kind of deep, dark red, perfect for bringing that elegant vintage touch.

Speaking of red, Swan Lake was a sure-fire hit with its gorgeous sets and dramatic costumes. It’s the ultimate princess tale, with tragic drama and delicate beauty, plus a lovely swans' white tutu - pure drama and elegance. Remember, it’s about love, deception, and an incredible performance, and the ballet world was captivated!

I have to say, this Christmas season saw Swan Lake productions pop up all over the UK. The Birmingham Royal Ballet hosted their own rendition with beautiful scenery that left the whole audience breathless. I’ve heard the scenery is still quite magical to this day, especially when they incorporate projections and holograms into the stage sets. It’s quite the dazzling spectacle!

Christmas Pantomimes: Remember all the Christmas panto fun? The silly jokes, over-the-top costumes, and a chorus of boos and cheers for all the characters – pantomime was an absolute Christmas tradition back in '98! I loved these Christmas productions and even enjoyed trying my hand at creating costumes, with plenty of glitter and feather boas, which became all the rage.

And who could forget those spectacular shows like Beauty and the Beast! A perfect mix of dancing, theatre, and those wonderful ballroom scenes that you always find in classic pantomimes, it was the perfect way to celebrate the festive season. We went with a group from my ballet classes, and everyone always wanted to dress up!

As I delve into those Christmas memories, one thing always makes me smile - it’s how my love of Christmas ballet fashion evolved into a fascination with vintage pieces and unique styles. I still adore rocking sequins, satin, and glitter at shows. The love of performing, whether on stage or on the street, it just all comes from the wonderful world of Christmas ballet, all that glitter and magic and glamour, it makes me so happy.

But even with all this amazing inspiration, my absolute favourite part about Christmas time? It’s the joy that it brings. Whether it’s twirling around with your family, dazzling your friends with ballet-inspired looks, or just sharing laughter over a cup of cocoa, Christmas ballet and the holiday spirit remind us that even the most glitzy and glamorous things always come back to joy. And that’s something that will never go out of style.

Remember darlings, every single one of you is beautiful! So grab your cutest, pinkest, most glitzy tutu, get your glam on, and spread the holiday magic wherever you go!
