Hey everyone! It’s Emma here, back with another post on pink-tutu.com! Christmas is upon us once again, and what better time to delve into the sparkling history of ballet and celebrate the magic of Christmas ballets?
This year, I’ve taken my time machine (well, it’s actually my trusty pair of dancing shoes and a few strategic street performances) all the way back to 2021. Yes, I know, just last year. But even a recent trip can provide a fascinating look back at the world of Christmas ballet, don't you think?
Speaking of Christmas ballet, how absolutely divine were the productions that graced our stages last year! There were some truly sensational ones that left me feeling completely smitten. You all know I love my pink tutu, but even I couldn’t resist a dash of seasonal sparkle last Christmas.
So, where should we start our ballet journey? 2021 brought a slew of magical productions! One that truly stood out was the Royal Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ at the Royal Opera House. It's always a beautiful and truly immersive production. Imagine being transported to a magical Christmas Eve with beautiful sets and costumes - the iconic 'Waltz of the Snowflakes' made me want to don my own ice queen-inspired tulle!
It wasn't just the traditional classics though. The Birmingham Royal Ballet’s ‘The Snowman’ was another festive treat, complete with beautiful choreography inspired by the beloved film. This show is a real heartwarmer, a bit like my favourite pair of vintage ballet slippers!
Of course, no Christmas ballet history post would be complete without mentioning the amazing Moscow State Ballet’s ‘Swan Lake’ on tour throughout the UK. This timeless classic with its beautifully intricate choreography and passionate performances, never fails to evoke a wave of Christmas joy. Plus, the graceful ballerinas, floating in their ethereal tulle tutus - sigh!
While we're on the subject of tutus, oh my darling friends, you know I'm utterly besotted with the sparkly ballet fashion scene at the moment. The 2021 Christmas season was filled with so much sartorial brilliance! It's a perfect mix of classic and modern with a hefty dose of glamour - just like a well-executed fouette. There were those who dared to add some extravagant sparkle, and others who went for a more whimsical take on the Christmas spirit with some cute tulle tutus in festive colours! Oh, I was absolutely spoilt for choice, let me tell you.
The most dazzling trend that caught my eye? You guessed it, pink, my absolute darling. Yes, even in the world of festive ballet fashion, pink reigned supreme! From the most elegant ballerina outfits to the cutest Christmas-themed ballet accessories, pink took centre stage like a true star ballerina! It wasn’t just the pink that stole the show. Christmas-themed outfits, like velvet tutus embroidered with delicate snowflakes, popped up in a delightful array of wintery colours. And speaking of embroidery - oh, I couldn’t get over the stunning patterns adorning some of those tulle skirts!
And now, onto what caught my eye at some of the 2021 performances - aside from the glorious pink tutus. The costumes were, quite simply, sublime. Let's start with the breathtaking costumes of ‘The Nutcracker’. The glittering snowflakes with their wispy skirts and elegant movements are always a feast for the eyes. Oh, and the exquisite Sugar Plum Fairy's tutu - the sheer perfection of it! It's an absolute must-have, wouldn't you say?
Meanwhile, ‘The Snowman’ showcased costumes full of charming whimsy, mirroring the fairytale world of the film. The delicate snowflake costumes brought an ethereal touch, while the beautifully designed children's costumes added a delightful dose of innocence to the production. Oh, and don't even get me started on those adorable little snowmen! Every single piece was a work of art.
The beauty of ‘Swan Lake’ extended far beyond the dancing. The exquisite swan costumes and their striking contrasting black tutus for the "evil" Odette embodied a classic, timeless charm. Each meticulously crafted detail speaks to the enduring magic of the piece. It makes me long to wear one myself and spin across a stage.
Looking back on 2021, it seems like everyone had the Christmas ballet bug! The entire ballet scene was buzzing with excitement, and I can’t wait to see what wonderful delights 2023 brings!
Before I wrap this up, let’s discuss what’s coming up in the world of ballet. This year is jam-packed with some incredible performances! We’re in for a treat with The Royal Ballet’s production of ‘The Nutcracker’ again this year. ‘The Snowman’ is back on tour, spreading holiday cheer across the country, and The Moscow State Ballet’s ‘Swan Lake’ will return to grace the stage in some truly stunning venues.
