Hello my lovelies! Emma here, back from another incredible trip through time, ready to share a delightful dose of ballet history with you all. As always, my faithful companion Magic Meg, my dazzling pink-sparkling shire with golden hooves, galloped me to a destination both wondrous and whimsical - 5th May 1686. And yes, you guessed it, we're going all pink this time too!
This month's adventure was particularly special. As I glided through time on Magic Meg's back, the landscape shifted before my eyes. I landed in the heart of the English countryside, bathed in the golden glow of the afternoon sun. The air was alive with the scent of blossoming flowers, a sweet, earthy aroma that would later inspire me to use the "Gardenia" scent in my "Enchanted Spring" ballet collection (coming soon! π).
The streets of London were alive with bustle and activity, with grand carriages, dashing gentlemen and, of course, lovely ladies adorned in elaborate gowns. Oh, how I yearned to jump into the scene and twirl in their midst!
Now, let's delve into the exciting world of ballet, which, despite it being so much further in the past, had already begun to blossom in all its glory!
Imagine this: a lavish ballroom filled with dancing couples, elegant chandeliers sparkling above, and music swelling in the air. A scene so picturesque! The king, James II, had a deep passion for the dance, hosting regular balls and performances in the Palace.
The 17th century was all about a more theatrical dance, with rich costuming and intricate footwork. It was a time of invention, of movement evolving from courtly dances into what we now know as ballet. There was much influence from the French Ballet, bringing in complex patterns and refined movements.
I envisioned ballerinas gliding through the ballroom, their gowns shimmering with every twirl. Imagine those dresses β so long, so sweeping, such a joy to twirl in. A stark contrast to our more practical leotards, but nonetheless, a piece of history we shouldn't forget. I couldn't help but ponder, how these styles might inspire a contemporary ballet costume collection... hmmm.
It was during this era, with all the grand theatre and extravagant court balls, that the real magic started to unfold. It was during this time, in fact, that French ballet master Pierre Beauchamp penned the foundational work for all modern-day dancers - βAn Explanation of the Different Pasβ β a collection of codified ballet steps, forming the foundation of the ballet vocabulary we still use today. Now that's truly fascinating, isn't it?
Speaking of vocabulary, have you all taken a stab at mastering some of the iconic steps we still do in class? It really helps us understand the origin of these elegant movements. And this, my lovely ballet lovers, is how history plays a key role in our art. By knowing its roots, we can grow, flourish and express ourselves on stage.
On a side note, there were some pretty impressive theatrical performances happening on stage. A captivating blend of opera, theatre and dancing made it a truly immersive experience. I couldn't help but think about all the modern ballet adaptations of operas Iβve enjoyed!
Itβs fascinating how the threads of dance continue to weave through history, donβt you think? Each period brings its unique flair, each era shapes our understanding of movement and tells a new story through steps and emotion.
So, my loves, what have I gathered for my collection? Well, besides a collection of "pretty" buttons from the period's dressmaker β which might even inspire my new tutu design! β I came away with a journal recording of a local dance performance, which I will transcribe and share on our blog next month. This little treasure allows us to experience the vibrant, living theatre of that era through the lens of the performers.
Of course, I spent the rest of the day trying to find a pair of pink tutus in that time! Though sadly, they were far from a trend then, I did find a silk petticoat in a blushing shade that will definitely add to my pink collection β the one with golden lace trim!
That brings me to the end of this captivating time-travel escapade, but before I bid adieu, don't forget my beautiful friends! My mission is to get everyone dancing, and wearing a pink tutu! Let's share this joy, this passion for dance, with the world.
