Post Number 914: February 2nd, 1737: A Time for Firsts!

Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-wearing, time-traveling ballerina!

Welcome to another thrilling escapade through the glorious history of ballet, as chronicled on www.pink-tutu.com. This month, I’m taking us back to 2nd February 1737. Hold onto your tiaras, my dears, as we’re off to the glittering, exciting world of ballet, where we’ll uncover the birth of some truly magical moments!

I’ve always said, “there’s no place like home,” but today, I had to make an exception! My trusty pink-sparkling shire horse, Magic Meg, whisked me off to the beautiful Italian city of Venice – oh, darling, the architecture! So charming! - to witness an absolute game-changer for ballet!

This momentous occasion was, as far as history knows, the very first ballet performance held on an actual stage in a grand theatre, built specially for the event. And guess who graced the stage? It was the brilliant, beloved Teatro San Cassiano, showcasing the dazzling artistry of one Monsieur Pierre-François Liotard – just think, the first professional ballet company, Le Ballet-Comique de la Reine, in a bespoke ballet theatre! My goodness, this was revolutionary!

Imagine being the first to witness a ballet production performed on a stage built for just that! I imagine the thrill of seeing Monsieur Liotard dance, with all that history-making excitement swirling around him. My darlings, ballet history was written that day, and my heart was filled with joy to witness it.

There are rumours circulating that there had been prior stage productions of ballet but, for sure, this one marked a shift in the artistic landscape of ballet, forever solidifying its place in the realm of theatre and giving birth to a vibrant tradition that we love and cherish to this very day.

With the echoes of that momentous first still reverberating, my rucksack, filled with a new collection of enchanting ballet stories, feels positively overflowing.

On the subject of firsts, wouldn't it be just the most incredible feeling, my loves, to witness your very first ballet? Or perhaps your very first dance recital? My first recital was, for a very shy six-year-old Emma, quite a terrifying experience. Yet, even in my fear, I found an almost magical, otherworldly joy! Just imagine, if we could bottle that sensation! Imagine having a little time-travelling potion to revisit those initial magical moments. The thrill! The joy! My goodness, the utter pink-tutu ecstasy!

My darlings, with every first in our ballet history, we lay the foundation for a glorious legacy, building a vibrant artistic culture that touches the heart and sets our imaginations soaring. Every pirouette, every jeté, every elegant arabesque, becomes part of that legacy, making a mark on our collective ballet soul!

Now, darling, to fill that insatiable shopping appetite that comes hand in hand with ballet. A good dose of window-shopping is what's needed! As I’ve mentioned before, Venice is just overflowing with gorgeous, charming stores – full of vibrant fabrics, beautiful silk ribbons, and lace that would make a tutu swoon!

Ah! But of course! Speaking of our tutus, we must reflect for a moment upon their significance in all this historical ballet revelry! We must recognise that each generation of ballet dancers has had their own unique, ever-evolving tutus. Perhaps in those early days of the first stages, there were more flowing, graceful, graceful forms to match the architecture. The elegance! Imagine the sheer elegance of the first tutu-clad dancer! Oh, I must find more about the early tutu creations – there's definitely a research trip on the horizon!

Now, my dear readers, this fabulous time travel excursion has inspired me to share a bit of my life with you! Just yesterday, I had the sheerest pleasure of performing at a sold-out performance in beautiful Derbyshire! You see, that's where all this magical time travel gets its funding - yes, my dears! You guessed right, from performing in beautiful venues all over the UK! The ballet world is so diverse, a constant whirlwind of colour, music, passion and history. The magic of it all fills my heart, and Magic Meg, with a joyful exuberance, that carries us into every new ballet adventure!

You see, I always believed in ‘dreaming big’. And there I was, in the midst of it, the joy of the dance, the beautiful pink of my tutu – shining brightly! If a girl from Derbyshire can time travel through the colourful fabric of history and bring you a tale, who knows what your own adventures may hold?

As a wise ballet teacher once said to me, “There's a special kind of magic in a pink tutu, my dear,” and if I can spread that magic by encouraging you all to embrace your inner ballet dreamer, I will know that all these adventures will have been worth every pink pirouette, every leaping jeté and every graceful arabesque!

Now, darlings, grab your ballet shoes and put on your best pink tutu - don't forget to spin for extra sparkle! – and meet me next month, right here, at www.pink-tutu.com.

Until then, take care, darlings, and happy dancing!

Emma
