Hello darlings, and welcome back to my Pink Tutu Travels! It's the 6th of June, 1837, and your girl Emma is back from a whirl of a journey! As you all know, June is the month of romance and weddings, and this trip was just that, a love affair with history, sprinkled with some glitzy Victorian glamour!
This month, I've been whisked away to London, that city of charm and enchantment, on the back of my ever-reliable travel companion, Magic Meg. If you've missed our introduction, Magic Meg is a dazzling, pink-sparkling Shire horse with golden hooves and a cascading mane and tail as white as fresh snow. π¦ You can usually find her grazing peacefully on pink-tinged grass under the shimmering Derbyshire sky, but when the call of adventure comes, she's ready for the road, trotting along with a twinkle in her eye!
Now, before we dive into the whirlwind that is Victorian ballet, let's rewind the clock! π°οΈ The date, 6th of June, 1837, was a momentous one. It was the very day that Queen Victoria, our reigning monarch, took the throne, sparking an era of opulent grandeur and dazzling artistic movements. In that very year, a young Mademoiselle Taglioni, known for her breathtaking lightness and artistry, took the stage, captivating the world with her iconic "La Sylphide."
Oh, you must picture the scene, darling! π Gaslit theatres, with velvet seats, sparkling chandeliers and elegant audiences clad in their finest finery, waiting in bated breath for the spectacle of ballet to unfold. Ballet at the time was the height of entertainment, the pinnacle of artistic expression, and everyone, from the royalty in their gilded boxes to the townspeople packed in the balcony seats, would be transported by the dancersβ elegance and graceful movements.
Naturally, as a devoted tutu-clad traveller, my backpack was overflowing with all the essential items! From velvet and silk fabrics and intricate lace designs for inspiration to tiny hand-painted portraits of ballerinas and sketches of opulent ballet costumes β my bag, my dear readers, is a treasure trove of ballet history!
But this time, something truly magical happened! While exploring Covent Garden, the centre of London's theatre district, I bumped into a most charming gentleman. He introduced himself as a famous ballet historian and a curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum! It turned out that he had recently discovered a collection of ballet tutus dating back to this very era β truly a dream come true! ππ
The sheer artistry of those Victorian tutus was simply breathtaking! Lush silks, swirling lace, ribbons as delicate as spider webs, all gathered and shaped to enhance the graceful movements of the dancers β pure elegance! The fabrics flowed like a gentle breeze, painting the air with stories of love, adventure and a captivating artistic spirit.
I was mesmerised, and I knew this was a chance I simply couldn't miss. This charming gentleman, with his vast knowledge and passion for ballet, allowed me to peek into this amazing collection β an exclusive sneak peek into the ballet costumes worn during the early days of Victorian ballet! Can you imagine? Being allowed to touch the history of ballet, holding onto a costume that was worn by the very dancers who set the scene for generations to come! It was an absolutely priceless experience, something I'll cherish forever.
But that's not all! Our friendly historian then revealed a treasure trove of information about the incredible talents on stage during this time! The likes of Marie Taglioni, Carlotta Grisi and Fanny Cerrito, all legends in their own right, adorned these intricate costumes, using their artistry to inspire awe in every audience. I had to capture every single detail, the shape of a tutu, the colour of a silk, the design of a lace. My imagination went wild with ideas for my own tutu creations β and trust me, you won't be disappointed with the designs Iβll unveil soon! π€«
With my backpack bursting with new inspiration, and my head overflowing with incredible stories, I bid farewell to London, promising the curator to come back for more β you canβt just visit such treasures once! As the sun set on the city, turning the sky into a palette of fiery hues, I mounted Magic Meg, feeling as light as a ballerina poised for her grand finale.
It was another magical trip through time, leaving me utterly inspired and deeply moved by the magic of ballet's rich history! π« But darling, before I go, do you know why pink is my absolute favourite colour for tutus? Because it radiates positivity and happiness! It's like a whirlwind of good vibes, bringing a smile to every face it graces. π So, letβs all strive for a little more pink, a little more tutus, and a whole lot of joy!
Until next time, stay sparkling, stay curious, and donβt forget to rock your pink tutu!
Love,
Emma
