Pink Tutu Travels: Post #3843 – A Magical Trip to 1981!

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, your one-stop shop for all things ballet and time travel. I'm your hostess, Emma, and I'm thrilled to be taking you on a journey to a truly iconic year – 1981!

Now, you might be wondering how a Derbyshire lass like myself manages to travel through time, well, let me introduce you to my faithful steed, Magic Meg. This stunning shire horse, with her glistening pink coat, golden hooves, and white mane and tail, is truly the epitome of elegance. I swear, sometimes I think she’s just as excited as I am to jump back into history. We travel in style, of course, with me wearing a pink tutu, always. And yes, it's quite the sight to see – a pink tutu gliding through time! My trusty leather rucksack is always at hand for collecting little trinkets and tales from the past.

But, enough about me! Let’s talk about ballet in 1981. What a time to be a dance enthusiast! The world was abuzz with talent, and I was eager to see what the ballet scene had in store.

London Calling: The Royal Opera House was buzzing. You see, the legendary Rudolf Nureyev was starring as the dashing Prince DĂ©sirĂ© in The Sleeping Beauty. I can’t tell you how thrilled I was! The Royal Ballet was making a name for themselves at Covent Garden, showcasing a magnificent performance by Antoinette Sibley and David Wall in "Giselle" , which was celebrating the ballet’s two-hundredth anniversary. I've read all about this legendary performance and even snagged some amazing photos in the ballet shop there! Talk about a lucky find.

A New York Treat: Across the pond, American Ballet Theatre was also going strong. This March, Mikhail Baryshnikov was in a glorious Swan Lake, alongside Gelsey Kirkland and Cynthia Gregory – absolute icons! And of course, there was an excellent performance of “Don Quixote”, with a lovely mix of dancing and charming storytelling. My rucksack is now overflowing with beautiful ballet tickets, programs, and a signed postcard by Mr. Baryshnikov himself. It’s amazing what you can find with a little time travel magic!

Back Home in the UK: I couldn’t miss a trip to Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London to see a fantastic double bill – “Elite Syncopations” and “The Merry Widow,” a combination of lively modern dance and the classical elegance I adore. Oh, and the dance-infused theatre performance "Dancing” at the Theatre Royal Haymarket was a joy. Ballet has truly infiltrated so many artistic mediums!

I must say, the fashion back then was just divine. Bold colors, big hair, and fabulous clothing. It was almost enough to make me consider abandoning my signature pink tutu, although it does add a pop of colour against these wonderful bold trends. Speaking of colour, those vintage tutu’s, with the frills, the tulle, the sequins and the silk are just simply divine!

This little trip had my heart aflutter, full of new discoveries, inspiring dance, fabulous fashion and of course, magical Meg, who was as well-behaved as ever! There's no other place I'd rather be than traveling through time, surrounded by the grace and beauty of dance.

Speaking of beauty, if you'd like to join me in wearing pink tutus, hop over to our website www.pink-tutu.com and grab yourself one of my gorgeous pink tutu creations!
