Hello darlings!

Welcome to Pink Tutu Travels, your monthly dose of fashion history, time travel escapades, and of course, plenty of pink tutus! Today, we’re celebrating post number 73! This time, we're going back to a day when leotard fashion was changing the world – January 1st, 1865. Buckle up your pink sparkly shoes, grab your favourite tutu, and let's dive into this magnificent time travel adventure!

Now, as a dedicated leotard fashion enthusiast, I often wonder, “Where did these amazing, practical pieces of clothing even come from?” So, with my magical, shimmering pink time-travelling leotard, I whisked myself back to the 19th century. Just imagine!

Landing in a cloud of shimmering sparkles right in the heart of London on this momentous January 1st, I felt an immediate change in the air – the city was buzzing with the excitement of a new year. A vibrant energy coursed through the streets as Londoners rushed about, but one thing I noticed right away, there weren't many tutus in sight! However, there were hints of the coming revolution in dance wear - men in their "tights" (as they were called then). I was dying to know what was happening with leotard fashion at this time.

A Revolution in Men’s Fashion?

On January 1st, 1865, I witnessed something remarkable: men's tights (also referred to as "flesh tights") were finally catching on. Now, let me tell you, back then these weren't just simple leggings, they were marvels of the time. You could find these "tights" fashioned from wool, linen, or even silk, a true testament to the ingenuity of fashion design. These “tights”, in a sense, were the forefathers of today’s leotards – streamlined, form-fitting garments for athletes and artists alike. But more on this fascinating fashion link later!

The French Influence:

For this journey, I popped into the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. After all, I’d heard of this famed stage for its spectacular ballet performances. A symphony of lights, beautiful performers, and a general atmosphere of creative genius radiated from every corner. That evening, a very well-dressed chap dressed in "tights" gave a particularly stirring performance! I learned it was an adaption of Jules Verne’s ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth.’ Now that was an evening out if I do say so myself! He was an actor of note by the name of Jules Verne – just like the great writer, how curious!

An Early Hint of What's To Come: Leotards Take Flight:

Even then, with a hint of inspiration, a seed was planted - the "tights" on stage would go on to influence the development of the modern-day leotard. These close-fitting garments, which were often embellished with ribbons, offered unparalleled movement freedom, giving these performers the space they needed to soar across the stage.

This incredible time travel journey was so exciting! Seeing the beginnings of such iconic dancewear history up close is thrilling. Remember darlings, we're still in the very early stages of the leotard's incredible history, and that's what makes this period in time so significant. It's fascinating to witness the transformation from the simple "tights" worn by dancers, to what we know and love as the sleek and stylish leotard of today.
