Pink Tutu Travels: Time Traveling Leotards! Post #104 - 1867: August 8th

Hey all you fabulous tutu-wearers,

Welcome back to my pinktastic blog, www.pink-tutu.com! This month I’ve jetted back in time, as usual, in my trusty sparkly pink time travelling leotard. My destination? 1867, August 8th! I was thrilled when I popped through the time portal, landed, and was surrounded by such a glamorous setting for this month's adventure!

Just imagine: it’s London, and the hottest tickets in town are for The Grand Pantomime at the Royal Coliseum. Now, we’re not talking about ā€˜Aladdin’ here; they were talking about ā€˜Little Red Riding Hood’! Fancy a story for grown-ups? In fact, pantomimes were HUGE, and that’s how many people first saw the leotard. I knew this trip was going to be absolutely magical!

This week, it's all about ballet - *"The ballet world is alight!" * And in August 1867, what better way to immerse myself in the fashionable world of the leotard than to see a show by one of the biggest ballet stars of all time: the legendary Mademoiselle Marie Taglioni!

She’s one of those names I’d heard throughout time - it’s like saying "Baryshnikov" today, you know. But seeing the real deal, up close and personal? Whoa! Marie was all grace and poise - I just loved the look on people's faces when she glided onto the stage - thrilled wouldn’t even cover it!

What was truly mesmerising was the costumes she wore. A true dancer, her wardrobe showcased a streamlined elegance. Tight-fitting and long-sleeved, the dance leotards she wore showcased every move – all whilst ensuring elegance and complete freedom of movement.

Back then, ballet leotards weren’t just about function, but about design - they really knew how to do it with a dash of fashion flair, too.

What’s in Fashion for the Leotard Set: 1867

There's nothing quite like delving into a fascinating wardrobe in history. Let me take you on a fashion trip down memory lane to see what everyone was wearing…

Leotard Designs

You might have seen your local dancers in ā€˜sparkly Lycra’, but this is where the story begins! The traditional dance leotard had a very different feel to the modern-day version we are familiar with.

  • It had a longer torso.
  • Made in a range of colours - think of deep ruby red, emerald green, or even a midnight blue, which were hugely popular - all the shades were dramatic!
  • A little ā€˜booby’ detail – remember, the era of the corset was in full swing, so that was always a part of the look, to keep things ā€˜elegant’, in an undergarment sense!

Let's dive deeper, shall we? As you already know, there's a leotard to suit every style, every personality, and I just love seeing that reflected back through the ages! You’re just as likely to find a ballet dancer sporting a sleek leotard that reflects the movement and flexibility of their art, but this year in the ballet world we’ve also seen a huge demand for leotards that give the dancers that ā€œaristocratic, demureā€ look. Very fashionable, this year, everyone's getting their unique flair into leotard styling!

A Peek Inside My Wardrobe:

Since I’m back in time, you know that I've had to pack accordingly! To me, the beauty of travelling through time is all about respecting where I am without completely sacrificing my style! Here’s what I've got in my pink sparkly leotard time travel case (a good size because time travel requires you to bring everything!):

  • Classic Dance Leotard – Made in beautiful shades of blush, with the most amazing cutwork and detail on the bodice – I had it custom-made!

  • Tutus, oh yes, Tutus!! – For performances I can always count on the crowd to really go wild! I had an all-pink tulle one crafted - and trust me, pink never goes out of style, even in 1867! But when I'm walking around I’ll swap to something that’s more ā€œage-appropriateā€ like my super chic (pink) layered silk tutu for that vintage feel. It literally makes you feel like a fairytale!

I’ll Be Blogging From My Dressing Room!

Back in London in August 1867, the streets of London are buzzing, but if you want to see real energy, you head to Covent Garden and join the throngs of fashionistas making their way to the Royal Opera House. That's where I’m spending my week - watching the ballet world unfold right before my eyes. It's just bursting with inspiration!

In next month’s blog, I’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes adventures from London. From ballet class to performance reviews, I’m on the case, giving you a front row view to everything that’s happening in leotard fashion.

Keep that fabulous, pink-tutu vibe alive - until next time!
