Hello my darling fashionistas! It's your favourite Derbyshire-born ballerina blogger, Emma, back with another peek into the captivating world of leotard fashion. This month, we’re time-traveling to a most splendid day – the 6th of June, 1873 – a date etched forever in my memory because, well, just wait until you hear what went down!
Now, you all know my favourite way to travel: shimmering and swirling in my magical pink time-traveling leotard! I don’t like to boast (okay, maybe a little), but this beauty catches the eye even when surrounded by the bustling, brightly dressed crowds of the past. It's a beacon of colour, radiating pure joy wherever it twirls.
So, off we pop to the year 1873, the era of long skirts and bustles. Can you believe it? Fashion back then wasn’t all about the freedom of movement like we enjoy in our darling leotards! It was all about, well, hiding it! I couldn’t bear the thought of a day without feeling the breeze twirling around my ankles.
This trip, though, was going to be extra special because, well, a certain French choreographer, Marius Petipa, was performing at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. Now, you wouldn’t be caught dead in a theatre without an elaborate dress in those days. But my sparkly pink leotard wouldn't be out of place anywhere, even in those extravagant crowds! I’m like a pink confetti explosion in an old-fashioned ball!
We've all heard of Petipa's legendary work, "The Sleeping Beauty", and his genius behind the ballet "Don Quixote", which is full of drama, grand set pieces and swirling emotions! But guess what, darling? This performance was of "La Esmeralda". I was bursting with excitement!
It was pure theatre, and quite frankly, my dearest readers, you know me, and you know that when I speak of 'pure theatre', I'm not simply talking about the art of performance. No, no, this is about a fusion of spectacle, artistry, and fashion! This 'Esmeralda' was a ballet of powerful emotion! Every movement, every pause was crafted to tell a story. This is where my passion for dance and history intertwined! And the costuming, oh my!
You wouldn't see the body-skimming leotards of our era. Imagine the tightest corsets you’ve ever seen, paired with full-skirted gowns! All I could imagine was all those beautiful gowns rustling and twirling across the stage. Can you picture it, darlings? You know, I may just have to go back for another peek sometime...
The ballet itself was simply captivating! But even better, darlings, was the leotard fashion in the lobby during the interval! Everyone had dressed up in their most stylish finery, so of course, the women's costumes were quite extraordinary.
While most of the women were in the usual extravagant gowns with flounces and trimmings, it's fascinating how even in 1873, a touch of rebellion was stirring. A few, dare I say a handful of daring souls, dared to venture beyond the conventional. Their attire, for those times, was rather scandalous. The key? They were in fitted jackets and skirts that had been pushed well above their ankles. Now, imagine that! We wouldn’t think twice today about those daring styles but in 1873? They caused a flutter. I just knew this was a time when the world was about to open up for more fashionable freedom, and that made me utterly delighted!
Of course, my trip wouldn't be complete without a visit to the 'Bon Marche', a dazzling department store in Paris. This grand store was at the cutting edge of the fashion scene, even back then, much like the department stores of today. As I floated through the aisles in my sparkly leotard, I imagined a vision for the future, a world where women wore beautiful leotards everywhere, where they felt confident and comfortable while embracing the graceful freedom of movement.
Back in the present, the world’s embracing change at a rate faster than a ballerina spinning en pointe. But I'll tell you this: nothing quite matches the allure of time-travel, and even if some might call me 'eccentric' for my fashion choices, it’s clear my pink tutus are creating waves!
