Pink-Tutu.com Blog Post #178: A 19th Century Whirlwind

Greetings, dear readers! It's your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller Emma, and I'm absolutely brimming with excitement about this month's historical jaunt. We're stepping back to 10th October 1873, my dears! Buckle up, it's going to be a colourful ride!

As a ballet devotee, I simply cannot resist a trip back to the 19th century - it was an era where dance took on a whole new level of opulence and artistic exploration. I'm just about to step into my trusty pink sparkling time travel leotard (let's be honest, it's pretty much my lucky charm by now). It's a shimmery affair with sequins that would make even the most jaded theatre critic gasp with delight! It perfectly complements my twirly, full-length pink tutu – just the sort of ensemble to turn heads, whether in Derbyshire or, in this case, Victorian London!

Oh, the sheer beauty of Victorian fashion, wouldn’t you agree? I've got a weakness for those elaborate hoop skirts, delicate corsets, and intricately detailed gowns – they exude elegance and grace.

What's the leotard scene like back then?

The leotard, as we know it today, was a few years away from being invented. But I can assure you that the dancers back then had their own unique, beautiful dancewear! Think lightweight, delicate fabrics, flowing skirts (perhaps just a little shorter than a proper 'skirt' would be!) with a focus on both grace and ease of movement.

Imagine my excitement when I stumble upon an early rehearsal for 'Giselle,' a ballet that has enthralled audiences since the 1840s. The dancers – each a vision of feminine strength and poise – were practicing their steps in graceful, flowing costumes that hinted at the shape of a leotard to come. It made me appreciate how dance, and dancewear, had been slowly evolving towards the form and structure we're so familiar with today.

On the performance front

I'm planning on soaking up the cultural delights of this particular date in history, so expect lots of updates about the London stage and, of course, a touch of Victorian flair. It was an era brimming with musical theatre, operetta and grand opera, so there’s definitely no shortage of dazzling spectacles to discover. I simply can’t wait!

If you've been inspired to go on your own leotard-loving adventure through history (who wouldn't be!), remember to keep the spirit of fashion alive – whether it's in a graceful, flowing skirt or a modern, sporty leotard. The history of leotard fashion is full of incredible stories, just waiting to be explored and shared.

And remember, ladies: the power of the pink tutu lies within each of us. Wear it with confidence, twirl with joy, and let the magic of ballet (and the love for leotard fashion!) guide you wherever you go.

Until next time, darlings!

Your always-optimistic, pink-tutu-clad blogger, Emma.

P.S.: As always, I fund my adventures with my favourite way of expressing the dance spirit: street ballet! Be sure to keep your eyes open for my performances across the time stream – I promise to leave you with a smile on your face (and perhaps a twinkle in your eye)!
