Pink Tutu Time Travel: 12th December 1874

Blog Post No. 192

Hello my darling dance-loving darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back from another incredible journey through the annals of leotard history! December has always been a month that fills my heart with the twinkly, joyous anticipation of the festive season, and this trip to 12th December, 1874, was simply magical. It was like stepping into a vintage Christmas card, full of warmth, sparkle, and, of course, exquisite fashion!

As always, my trusty time-travelling pink leotard, shimmering with the energy of a thousand twinkling fairy lights, whisked me back to this momentous date. It was the most fantastic feeling, swirling into 1874! I love seeing the look on people's faces as my sparkly pink leotard appears out of thin air. It's as if they’ve glimpsed a whimsical dream. It makes me giggle!

Now, let's get to the meaty business of 1874's leotard scene! The world was just beginning to be dazzled by the dance and movement potential of the leotard. In London's grand Covent Garden Theatre, a dance performance called "The Lady of the Lake" was drawing in the crowds, showcasing the elegant style of Victorian ballet, with performers moving effortlessly in what we'd call today the “classic ballet leotard” - a timeless design that would have looked so chic with one of my signature pink tutus! It was a time for elaborate and beautiful tutus with ribbons, feathers, and intricate embroidery. And even back then, the leotard was all about freedom and flowing movements.

Speaking of movements, I just had to join in with a flash performance at London’s prestigious Royal Opera House. Imagine it: me, swirling through the grand foyer in a sparkling pink tutu, my own modern interpretation of Victorian ballet!

Street Style Inspiration from 1874

Did you know that, for the first time ever in 1874, the city of London began to embrace street performances? What a truly exciting development for all us dancing lovers. In a city overflowing with historical beauty, the concept of street art and performances truly captivated me! Imagine being surrounded by horse-drawn carriages, grand architecture and a burst of dance energy - the Victorian era’s leotard evolution was a vision to behold.

Now, if you thought a pink tutu in London's Covent Garden in 1874 was a sight to see, just imagine the gasps I got when I popped by to the Palais Garnier Opera House in Paris. Paris is, of course, renowned for its romantic elegance, so it was only natural that its ballet style showcased both strength and grace, with a strong emphasis on elegant and romantic leotards. I was smitten by the delicate lace trims, ruched detailing and flowing satin. It was, however, all very demure.

A Dash of Pink

Remember my quest, darlings? My goal to get everyone wearing a pink tutu! I don’t mean a literal ‘everyone,’ that'd be quite chaotic, but it is my goal to see the colour pink accepted as a universal ballet staple. As a time traveller, I find that pink has a wonderful universal quality!

So, I set about making a bit of pink magic in 1874 Paris. It was, admittedly, a slightly difficult task. But luckily for me, my little street performance (just a small bit of swirling and leaping to showcase pink's vibrant spirit) garnered enough interest to open up some creative minds. A delightful young seamstress in the area was particularly receptive to my bright pink tutus and leotard designs. She was eager to make some for her clients. So, perhaps in a few weeks, the fashionable women of 1874 Paris will be seen out and about in a bit of my signature pink.

Speaking of Paris, I have a fabulous announcement for you!

Pink-Tutu-Worthy Events in 1874

In December of 1874, Paris was graced by none other than the divine Italian ballet superstar, Carolina Rosati! What a whirlwind! Rosati had the crowd at the Opera House absolutely mesmerized as she waltzed across the stage, every step dripping with grace and artistry. She was one of the earliest dancers to push the boundaries of leotard design, introducing styles with daring and innovative cuts and the inclusion of lace and other pretty trims that showed the artistry of the era's design techniques.
