Hello my darlings! Welcome to Pink-Tutu.com, your one-stop shop for all things sparkly, fabulous, and tutued! I'm Emma, your resident time-traveling ballerina blogger, and this month, we're whisking ourselves back to 1881 for a peek into the leotard world of the past!
Itās hard to imagine, but leotard history wasn't always a glamorous journey, much like my own life, haha! While we're living in a time when leotards can be everything from an ethereal masterpiece to a stylish everyday staple, things were a bit different in 1881. But don't let that stop you, lovelies, from wearing that amazing pink tutu I have my eye on - thereās a leotard for everyone, every era!
Speaking of eras, grab a glass of bubbly (it's a Monday, we've earned it, darling!) and let's hop into my time-traveling pink sparkling leotard. Oh, itās truly something, darlings! You should see the looks I get when I strut it on the streets in the 19th century! Let's see what leotard fashion the past has in store for us, shall we?
August 08th, 1881 - The Leotard Landscape
Back in 1881, leotards were more commonly known as "tights" or "combinations". The Victorian era was a time of modest dressing, and these weren't considered particularly glamorous. They were essentially functional undergarments - imagine a thin, skin-tight version of the slip we know today - meant to be worn under heavier skirts and dresses for warmth and to shape the silhouette. And guess what? They were most commonly made from wool, the fabric of choice for everything back then! It's almost funny, seeing all the fashion in the street today ā not many folks are in a wool leotard anymore!
The leotards back then were much different than what we have today ā for a start, no stretch fabric! They were very form fitting, but lacked the flexibility weāve become accustomed to. There weren't many dance studios or theatres with proper ballet training in existence, meaning less need for a garment that moved freely. Of course, leotards did play a role in the early days of ballet! Ballerinas like Fanny Elssler who graced the world stage in the mid-19th century often performed in leotards as āballet dressesā. They had the freedom of movement they required, and yet also fit into the elegant look expected by audiences at that time.
A Time For Change - The Evolution of the Leotard
As with many other clothing trends, the leotard would continue to evolve! In the late 19th and early 20th century, the ābathing dressā started gaining popularity as a beachwear item, and thatās where the true evolution began! Imagine the looks on everyone when the ābathing dressā ā the forerunner of today's swimsuit ā started to replace the heavy Victorian garb for summer activities like swimming and sunbathing.
So the bathing suit trend eventually found its way into the ballet studio, with elastic fabrics entering the picture for the first time! Suddenly, ballerinas started choosing comfort and ease of movement, and this change completely shifted the look of leotards. This era ushered in the beginning of the leotard as the sleek and versatile garment we adore today!
Leotard Trends Around the World - Fashion Inspiration on 08 August 1881
Think about it ā if the leotard had existed like we know it today, where would we have seen it worn back in August 1881?
Let's have a peek at a few international hotspots and imagine where our modern-day leotards might have made an appearance:
- London: Imagine, ladies, the ladies and gentlemen of the British Empire sporting their most elegant clothing ā the most stylish men wearing crisp suits and ties as they strolled the cobbled streets of London; the ladies showing off their opulent silk dresses and hats decorated with delicate lace and feathers.
Imagine the scene, then... Suddenly, imagine our sleek, stretch leotard popping up amidst that traditional attire. Weāve already seen what happened with the bathing dress: a completely unexpected splash of colour and fashion ā maybe the next āmust-haveā garment could have been an athletic-style, coloured leotard that everyone wants to wear! A girl can dream, right?!
Paris: Now let's travel over to Paris, where style has always been in the air. Just picture a grand fashion show showcasing the newest Parisian haute couture with intricate details, daring colors, and beautiful tailoring. Can you picture it, darlings, how a leotard could be added to that spectacle ā itās exciting! Just a little splash of sparkle, some colour added to those elegant silhouettes would surely draw even more gasps of admiration and wonder.
New York: Now imagine we're in New York City, where ambition, industry, and hard work come together. This was a place where you would have seen ladies in elaborate dresses walking down the streets, men in fine suits going to work in their offices, working men doing heavy duty work and everyone dressed according to their role in life, and yet... we still imagine that fabulous pink leotard appearing, turning heads! Could you imagine, dear reader, a fashion scene of sleek, fitted leotards paired with jackets and coats, just starting to become popular among women for a bold fashion statement!
