Pink Tutu Travels: 1882 - A Dance Through Time (Post #283)

Hello, darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! July is always such a fun month for me. It's when my birthday falls, you know - and I just adore the sunny, joyful feeling of this time of year. Today, however, I'm taking us on a very special time travel trip! I’m about to whisk us away to the delightful world of 7th July, 1882. Now, settle in comfortably in your own pink tutus (I'm assuming you all have one!), because we're about to go on an exciting journey!

I love exploring different eras through their clothing, and the 1880s offer a particularly enchanting slice of fashion history. Think whimsical hats, layers of skirts, corsets, and… of course… leotards! But, wait, darling! This isn't about a stiff, dark leotard. We're talking about the early, pre-ballet leotard, the forerunner of the beloved form of attire we know and love. Back then, it was about practicality for female gymnasts and dance students.

You see, my lovelies, ballet had been steadily growing in popularity, but a girl's attire for practice involved something much less elegant than our beloved pink tutus. Think full-length gowns and skirts, impractical, restrictive, and utterly limiting for acrobatic feats and gracefully flowing movements.

So how did the pre-ballet leotard fit into this dance landscape? Picture it! A stretchy, practical garment that enabled flexibility and freedom of movement. No wonder it was adored by those wanting to pursue the art of graceful movement.

To travel back to 1882, I slipped on my magical pink sparkling time travel leotard. Oh darling! You wouldn't believe the sheer thrill of taking that leap and finding myself amongst a flurry of gaslit streets and cobblestone paths, the air filled with the sounds of a bustling, horse-drawn carriage. The scent of horse manure? Not so delightful, my dear, but for the love of fashion and a peek into the past, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.

I always look out for fashion shows when I’m travelling back through time! It's how I see what everyone's wearing, how their styles evolve, how leotard fashion evolves and… of course, to inspire my own ballet performances.

Now, you wouldn't be surprised to learn there were no lavish fashion shows on 7th July 1882! You’re lucky you’re not travelling with me through time… there was a big lack of ā€˜pink tutus’ too. (Not surprising really as the ā€˜tutu’ as we know it was decades away. Still, no time travel blogger is going to let that stop them from finding some ballet-related action!)

My investigation into the leotard led me to The London Academy of Dancing where the dance and fitness studios used this revolutionary attire, embracing its comfort and freedom of movement. I watched them train - it's mesmerising seeing a form of practice evolve over centuries and the pure joy and freedom those girls demonstrated. I even tried a quick little pirouette myself… and you know what? My magical leotard can withstand any era’s dance trends. It was incredible!

Imagine the freedom of movement! In 1882, the leotard was like a fashion revolution - even more than a pink tutu in the modern day. They even used it to do gymnastic routines! (It truly makes the term ā€œleotardā€ a word encompassing multiple purposes!)

My wanderings lead me to the magnificent London theaters and dance halls. They are just overflowing with history! The Victorian elegance was breathtaking. Sadly though, it’s not really ā€˜our’ leotard’s scene just yet. Not one with sequins, frills, and a whole lot of ā€˜pink’. However, if you could travel back through time (as I can, darling!) you’d get a taste of those inspiring movements that would later translate into our gorgeous leotard and tutu trends today.

While there was no big fashion show to attend, the 7th of July was alive with performances – a concert at London's famed Crystal Palace, with a repertoire of classical pieces by masters such as Beethoven and Mozart. Imagine a night of orchestral brilliance in such a magnificent venue. A symphony of sound and artistry it would be, and just think… maybe we might be able to incorporate ballet with this form of classical music. Who knows… that might be another time-travel trip to plan.

The day’s travels are winding down. But I always remember that every moment in fashion history can have its own tale to tell. In the quietness of this magical time period, I can just see how the simple yet revolutionary attire is setting the scene for the incredible future of fashion - of the elegant and powerful leotard that will eventually lead to pink tutu trends in future.

Time travel, dear readers, is all about discovering those little moments that make our world of dance and leotards what it is today. Now go and buy that pink tutu and show the world how awesome it is. It’s time for pink tutu-dom and we are going to achieve it. Remember that it’s never too late to try something new, and with the spirit of dance and a little pink inspiration, you can do anything!

As always, darlings, please keep spreading the love of ballet and the sparkle of pink tutus throughout your own dance journeys!

Your Pink Tutu Traveller,

Emma
