Pink Tutu Travels: 12th December 1882 - A Century of Style! (Post #288)

Hello, darling dears! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, where we journey through time, exploring the exquisite world of leotards and the fabulous fashions that grace our bodies!

This month, we’re taking a trip back to 12th December 1882, a day steeped in leotard history. My trusty, oh-so-sparkly pink leotard is primed for a magical hop, so hold on tight, lovelies!

I'm writing this post from a delightful little café in the heart of Victorian London. It’s snowing outside, and the air is thick with the scent of gingerbread. Such a charming setting to share my latest adventures in leotard fashion.

As a true lover of all things pink, December 1882 feels very special. I mean, pink is absolutely the colour, don't you agree? Even in those more conservative Victorian times, it’s easy to find a touch of pink adorning everything from ladies' hats to the elaborate gowns of society ladies.

Speaking of elaborate gowns, it's no surprise that the leotard has evolved in style just as quickly as fashion itself. Imagine: you might be strutting your stuff on a London stage one day, sporting a leotard of exquisite satin and lace, only to find the very next day, a new, more practical leotard for ballet has emerged!

As we take a closer look at the 1880s, it's worth remembering how much emphasis was placed on beauty and decorum. A dancer's leotard was, therefore, much more than just functional clothing; it was an extension of their artistry. Ballet costumes were embellished with yards and yards of intricate embroidery and adorned with swathes of elegant ribbons.

Today's leotard fashion feels infinitely freer, of course! My own wardrobe is an eclectic mix of vintage and modern styles, and I absolutely adore how easy it is to express yourself with a little bit of tulle, a dash of sparkle, and a whole lot of pink!

I actually stumbled upon a fabulous shop in Soho that sells vintage dance costumes and vintage leotards. I just had to pop in for a quick browse, and let me tell you, dear readers, there’s a real magic to vintage pieces. Each leotard whispered tales of ballerinas and dancers past - and inspired a whole new appreciation for the history of the leotard!

You know what I love about history? Each era brings its unique style, and even if fashion fades, the artistry of leotard design remains. A peek into a Victorian dancer's wardrobe wouldn't feel so different from exploring the trends in dance fashion today, right?

For instance, remember the rise of the romantic tutus, those gloriously full, swirling designs? 1882 was an exciting time for ballet, where those grand Romantic-era tutus with multiple tiers of tulle made their mark. So incredibly inspiring! They became the cornerstone of ballerinas' stage presence, offering a truly mesmerizing effect.

Today, though, we see this timeless style of leotard embraced by the likes of Beyoncé, Madonna, and even Katy Perry. That's the beauty of fashion, it never really truly dies - it simply reinterprets itself, and the leotard is the perfect example of that.

I must say, though, dear readers, I have a bit of a personal connection with 1882, in more ways than one! Just last week, my great-grandmother, she of the formidable fashion sense and an uncanny resemblance to Marilyn Monroe, unearthed an exquisite silk pink leotard. Now, you wouldn't catch this in any shop these days, but it truly felt like fate sent it to me. This old-fashioned pink masterpiece has been re-born into my repertoire and adds a vintage, whimsical edge to all my current looks!

Now, where would a leotard enthusiast be without a bit of a performance, wouldn’t you agree? So, of course, I had to try it out! This pink wonder of a leotard and I waltzed through Trafalgar Square, attracting quite a bit of attention, I might add. But oh, that thrill! The crowd cheered, I twirled, and my heart skipped a beat as I felt the magic of ballet alive, a little taste of the world of the late 1800s!

After a day of exploration and ballet, I decided to treat myself to a grand finale – the opulent performance of 'The Nutcracker'. Imagine! Glittering tutus, swirling ballerinas, and all those handsome dancers in their impeccable tights. I just couldn’t resist snapping a picture in front of the London Coliseum – perfect Instagram fodder!

Before I depart to my next adventure, my dear readers, let's recap on our 12th December 1882 visit. A Victorian leotard had all the grace of a silk dress, the romantic charm of tulle and lace, but with a little bit of rebellious sparkle, a tiny rebellion in the way it hugged the dancer’s frame.

Let me tell you, these leotards have a tale to tell, my dear readers, a story that echoes in the dance fashion we see today. Every stitch and seam whispers of how the leotard transformed and adapted, reflecting the spirit of the age while never losing its unique elegance.

So, keep those eyes open for pink tutus! It is the way of the future, don’t you agree? They will be everywhere!

Keep it fabulous, and remember, we’ll see you for next month’s Pink Tutu Travels!

Lots of love, Emma xx
