Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog: Post #315 - A Whirl Through the 1885 World of Dance! 🩰✨

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite Derbyshire girl, Emma, back from another thrilling time travel adventure, all thanks to my magical, pink, sparkling leotard. This month, I’ve travelled back to the 3rd of March, 1885, and I've gotta tell you, things were a bit different when it came to dancewear!

Just picture it: bonnets, bustles, and corsets - very different from the chic leotards and tutus we’re used to today! But, like a bright pink flamingo in a flock of pigeons, my tutu made a statement as I flitted through Victorian London. Honestly, the stares I received were worth the price of a whole month's worth of tutus!

This month’s trip was inspired by a recent article I stumbled upon - you see, 1885 saw the dawn of a revolutionary new dance called The Cakewalk. Now, you might be thinking "Cakewalk? That sounds utterly boring!" - but trust me, this was revolutionary. Imagine a rhythmic promenade of elegant ladies and gentlemen in their finest attire, strutting and swaggering in a theatrical parade of waltzes and polkas - oh, the costumes!

Of course, the "cakewalk" was much more than just a fancy walk; it was a satire of the dance moves and attire of the newly freed African-American slaves who were starting to integrate into the wider society. Sadly, like most revolutions, it was controversial at first. Imagine the outrage from the old guard when their high-society waltz routines were ridiculed! But despite the controversy, the "Cakewalk" soon became wildly popular. It even graced the stage of the famed Folies-Bergère, where dancers adorned themselves with the extravagant style, making this the start of something special – dance entertainment.

The most important thing? It revolutionised the way people viewed dancing! Forget stuffy ballrooms and formal waltzes; now people were looking for dynamic and dramatic performances. The stage became a new avenue for exciting costumes and exhilarating choreography. And for someone who loves ballet and all its glorious attire as much as I do, that’s just incredible!

Now, back to leotard fashion - or lack thereof! Imagine the awkwardness! These lovely ladies danced in voluminous gowns and elaborate petticoats - not a single leotard in sight! The dancers moved with incredible grace, of course, but they had to deal with these huge skirts. It's a marvel they didn’t trip over themselves!

But the outfits did offer some lovely insights. We saw gowns made with luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, and lace, sometimes trimmed with shimmering beads and sequins - so glamorous! They were definitely aware of the power of visual impact even then! Imagine the glittering dresses adorned with extravagant jewelry! Imagine the spectacle! I truly believe that this time period laid the foundation for the stunning theatrical designs we see today.

And you know what? Seeing the evolution of performance fashion makes me realise that, although we take leotards for granted now, we're actually standing on the shoulders of giants - and I, Emma, can proudly declare, with all my time travelling heart, that leotards are truly timeless. They embody grace, elegance, and movement, just like a swirling pink tutu!

This adventure has been an eye-opener for me - especially when it came to shopping! The styles available at the local dressmaker were utterly captivating! You could find everything from silk dresses embroidered with the most stunning patterns to beautiful hats bedecked with elaborate feathers and lace. Sadly, not a single pink tutu in sight! I truly wish I could have just burst into a store and exclaimed "I need this entire collection in a fetching shade of pink!” Oh, how I longed for the days of vibrant, leotard-laden department stores!

My journey to 1885 has confirmed that every era has its own unique style. Even with all the societal restrictions, the Victorian women and gentlemen expressed themselves through their attire, showcasing elegance, charm, and, most importantly, the desire for beauty. It shows how the evolution of style has always gone hand-in-hand with dance.

Of course, I'm already looking ahead to my next journey! Where will my magical, pink leotard take me this time? Don’t forget to subscribe to www.pink-tutu.com to find out!

Until next time, keep swirling those tutus!

Lots of love, Emma xoxo
