Post 411: A Twirl Through Time! 🩰

Hey lovelies!

Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! I’m so excited to share with you all about my latest adventures, because you'll never guess where I've been this month – March 1893! Fancy that, a proper Victorian romp through history, right?

Now, before we get into all the fabulous fashion (because let's face it, that's what we all really care about, isn't it?), I need to tell you a little about how I landed there. This month's street performance went down an absolute storm! My usual routine of Swan Lake variations in a pink feather boa got such a good reaction in Derby Market Square that the crowds went wild. Honestly, the donations were pouring in, which meant my magical pink leotard was ready for its next trip!

As I twirled into the shimmering portal, I was transported back to a time of grand balls, lace-trimmed corsets, and, wouldn't you know it, a blooming leotard fashion scene!

Let's start with a look at leotard evolution in the 1890s. The late 19th century saw the emergence of a more active and liberated approach to women’s clothing. As ballet grew in popularity, the tights and leotard combo, worn under flowing tutus and skirts, was taking off in a way we can only dream of today.

I was blown away by the variety of designs! From elegant, fitted styles with decorative necklines and lace trims, to more sporty versions with practical leggings for freedom of movement. One leotard, I even saw, had ruched sleeves! The beauty of it was, the emphasis was still on femininity. Those Victorians were true fashionistas.

It wasn’t just about dance, either. This was an exciting time for gymnastics and athletics for women, and the leotard's adaptability as activewear really shone. The colours were mostly white and cream with splashes of colour like maroon and navy. Even if they didn't quite have that bright pink sparkle yet, the designs had me utterly smitten!

Now, imagine my delight when I bumped into a young, talented woman named Anna Pavlova! It seems like everyone in London is buzzing about her ballet technique and grace. I’d heard tales of her dancing, but to see it for myself was magical. You know how much I love theatre, and the chance to see a performance by this rising star was the perfect addition to my Victorian adventures!

And then, my heart skipped a beat as I entered a little hidden gem - a fashionable dressmaker's studio where they were creating the most incredible custom dance leotards! Can you believe it? Hand-stitched with beautiful embroidery and elegant pearl accents. Oh, how I wished I could get my hands on one of those beauties, though I wouldn’t dream of interrupting their craft.

I even snagged myself the most delightful little Victorian velvet cape with lace trim that would look perfectly with my pink tutu. Of course, I had to capture the perfect Instagram photo in a cobbled street and of course shared it on my story.

But as lovely as this trip was, there was one element that just didn't quite hit the mark for me. Imagine a world where you couldn't wear your leotard out of the house unless you were on stage? It seemed all these elegant dance leotards were purely for the theatre! * Talk about an unspoken rule, but I *can't just follow rules, you know. I had to bring some pink magic to the streets of London!

My pink tutu twirling debut in the heart of the city drew some peculiar looks and whispers, of course. But it also drew smiles, a few hesitant waves, and even one child's squeal of delight. It felt wonderful to be sharing the pink tutu magic, to be making people smile even for just a second, even if it felt like we were worlds apart in our style!

You see, my mission, you know? My calling! My mission isn't just to share my passion for ballet and the leotard. It's about spreading joy, encouraging expression and inspiring everyone to embrace their inner dancer in their own unique way! Even back in the 1890s, I could feel the spark of that energy and knew that someday, people would be dancing to their own tune in pink tutus all over the world!

So until next month, my loves, keep on twirling, keep on dreaming, and let’s work together to turn the world pink, one tutu at a time!

See you all next month on Pink-Tutu.com, where we'll be diving deeper into leotard trends throughout the ages. Don’t miss it!
