This month, I'm shimmying back to January 1st, 1894, leaving behind the glittering world of Derbyshire, England where I usually spend my time showcasing my latest street ballet performances and gathering inspiration for my next fabulous pink tutu. Don't worry, though, this trip is full of glamorous delights! I just know you'll be delighted to hear about this historical leotard discovery...

Let's start with the outfit! It's always an adventure getting ready for a time travel, and this time I'm feeling particularly radiant in my iridescent, pink sparkling leotard. It's perfect for adding a little magical flair to a Victorian era that needs a dose of pink positivity!

Imagine this, lovelies - the year 1894! While we might imagine a world of corsets and voluminous skirts, the dance world was already embracing change. Think shorter skirts, revealing glimpses of limbs, and a new focus on streamlined movement! Imagine ballet tights, tights, tights, tights! Oh how exciting! The foundations for the iconic dancewear we know and love were being laid!

But this isn't about revolutionary leotards, yet...

So what were dancers wearing back in the day?

Think graceful dresses, made from lightweight fabrics like silk and satin, flowing as they pirouetted and pliéed. Lace, delicate embellishments and elegant necklines added an air of femininity. They'd often wear a little something underneath –think about light cambric undergarments to ensure that every graceful move looked just right. No, these are not the super-stretchy leotards we wear now. However, it's this era of change that gives me hope! It reminds us that dance fashion evolves and that there's always something new on the horizon.

Now, let's delve into the theatre of 1894 – the world that captured everyone's imagination! Imagine the grand opera houses brimming with gas-lit brilliance and the buzz of excited anticipation in the air! There were performances everywhere – London was bursting with the most exquisite shows! Imagine ballets with vibrant, fantastical costumes, each dance a celebration of movement and storytelling.

But that's not all. We must give a little applause to variety theatre. This was where a mashup of performances, from vaudeville acts to ballet troupes, captivated the public! Music halls* lit up the night with laughter and cheers! They gave women dancers and entertainers a *platform to shine. So you see, the 1894 was a year when dancers, *especially those captivatingly talented women, began creating ripples in the fashion scene!

Back in the early years of the twentieth century, the modern leotard would really come into its own. As the ballet world shifted from romanticism to the dynamic styles of the 20th century, the needs of dancers evolved. Leotards would provide the flexible support and stylish practicality that would forever redefine dancewear. And even though we're back in 1894, the era is pulsating with exciting new ideas. It's like a leotard revolution waiting to happen! I see glimmers of that leotard revolution in the delicate dancewear of the time and I am positively thrilled about what the future holds for the leotard!

1894 has a wonderful palette of colours in theatre and ballet fashion - you know that Pink was a vibrant choice but imagine, my dears, pastel hues like rose, blush and mauve. I wouldn't be surprised if you found pink and these romantic hues peeking through lacework on dancewear and stage costumes.

Imagine, too, the opulence and artistry that was on show - Think of feathers, beads, sequins, all shimmering under the stage lights! This time, my travel leotard is shimmering in perfect harmony with the fashion of this decade! Oh! What an exciting time to travel back to - for the ballet fan and for the fashion fanatic!
