Pink Tutu Travels: Leotard History 1895 - A Ballet Blog by Emma

Post Number 435: March 3rd 1895: A Glimpse into the Glamorous Leotard Era

Hello darling dance-lovers! It’s your favourite time-travelling ballerina Emma here, back again for another magical jaunt into Leotard History. Today, my magical pink sparkling leotard (oh, how I love her! So shimmery and magical!) whisked me to a most delightful date: March 3rd 1895! I just had to share these glamorous findings with you!

I love to wear my pink tutu when time-travelling - it's such a joy to imagine myself floating across centuries, a whirl of tulle and sequins. It makes me feel so connected to the world of ballet through time!

This month, I'm feeling the “Art Nouveau" vibe, so naturally I've adorned myself with a vibrant pink silk tutu, embroidered with swirls of turquoise and gold. It reflects the beauty of this enchanting era.

My street ballet performances funded my journey back to 1895, and what a delight it was!

* Leotard Fashion: The Rise of the Graceful Form*

My oh my, the 1890s were a captivating period for leotards. I found myself strolling through Paris, a haven for fashion, gazing upon dancers' leotards - and their elegance! A move away from the earlier bulky garments (a fashion sin in my opinion, they concealed the lovely flow of a dancer’s limbs), this period was about accentuating the grace and beauty of the human form.

Gone were the frilly skirts and boned corsets that imprisoned women’s movement. Leotards embodied freedom of movement. This shift, my dears, was revolutionary! It truly felt like a new era of expression was beginning to blossom on stage!

The most exciting fashion development? The rise of the “tutu” - my dear friend indeed. Though in this era they weren't the puffy piles of tulle we see today, but more slim and elegant, hugging the shape of a dancer's leg.

* A Performance at the Palais Garnier*

Now, let's talk about the Opéra de Paris! The legendary Palais Garnier! I found myself entranced by the sheer luxury of it all: gilded ceilings, a sprawling stage, and the air charged with excitement before the show commenced. I’m such a theater-phile, and the opera house, my loves, is the ultimate escape.

I slipped into the theatre to see a performance of La Esmeralda by César Cui. Imagine - a ballet in six acts, filled with passionate dancing. It was truly a joy to watch the graceful dancers, gliding across the stage.

The leotards were nothing short of a masterpiece. The colour of the garments: rich crimson, the very colour of a sunset, soft ivory for the innocence of Esmeralda, and even a striking shade of a sky blue, to contrast with the rich crimson.

* Parisian Style*

I felt inspired by the beauty of these dancers, the elegant forms of their leotards, so I made my way to the most famous dressmakers of Paris: worth and Doucet. These were not simply dressmakers - they were artists! Their works were true masterpieces of art and fashion.

* The Perfect Outfit for a Day of Ballet Exploration*

My pink tutu, with its delicate swirling patterns, allowed me to be a part of the fashion spectacle around me without drawing too much attention to myself. I wore my time-travelling leotard - a stunning piece of satin in the brightest pink with silver sequins running across the bodice ( a touch of glam is always essential!), with a sweet white lace trim to add a whimsical feel. It was a simple yet elegant choice, and a great contrast to my vibrant pink tutu!

As I journey through time, it's the ordinary people who really fascinate me. So I spent some time in the city markets, soaking up the hustle and bustle of daily life. And oh! What a joy it was to discover a small dance studio, tucked away in a cosy corner of the city.

My journey wouldn't be complete without learning some new steps!
