Hello my darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! It's Emma here, your Derbyshire-born, tutu-loving time traveler! This month, my magical pink leotard took me on a whirlwind trip back to June 1895! I can’t even tell you how exciting it was to see the fashion from this period up close. It was like stepping into a fairytale!
1895 – A Year of EleganceNow, you know I’m obsessed with tutus, and they were the undisputed stars of the show back in the 1890s. Imagine, tulle in shades of ivory, pearl, and blush, perfectly constructed to catch the light like a hundred tiny rainbows. I have a whole stash of vintage silk ribbons and feathers, so of course, I had to whip up a few mini tutus myself for this trip. I know, I know! It’s a bit scandalous, but that’s my style!
Speaking of scandalous, the most surprising thing about ballet in the late 19th century is how utterly not scandalous it was! These women were ballerinas in the true sense of the word! Imagine the strength and flexibility it took to dance in these heavy, intricate garments. No one was wearing revealing crop tops or stretchy leggings. No, they were a vision of demure beauty, adorned in custom-made, flowing tutus, layered skirts, and even – get this - long, flowing sleeves!
The fabric was just glorious, all delicate, shimmering silks, gauzy lace, and plush velvet. It's all so different from the stretchy fabrics and minimalist designs we see in the modern world, don't you think? It's not about hiding your body in the 19th century; it's about celebrating its beautiful lines! And the color palette is absolutely dreamy! Forget neon colors! The trend was soft pastels: blush, pale peach, buttery yellow, powder blue… So chic!
The Magic of a Time Traveling Pink LeotardI’m sure you’re wondering – how did I actually get there? Well, as usual, it was my pink time-traveling leotard, sprinkled with the finest pixie dust. Just a quick twirl, a deep breath, and poof, I was transported!
My Top Leotard Trends from 1895Now, onto the most important part! The leotard trends! Yes, leotards were all the rage back then! The most common style featured a bodice, often trimmed with ribbon or lace, and a short skirt for freedom of movement, often featuring layers of tulle. Let me tell you, dancing in a real 19th century leotard feels absolutely regal. It’s like stepping into an ancient fairy tale!
I also discovered a few truly exquisite details like satin and lace appliques and some pretty impressive corseting! The leotards were made of fine fabrics like silk and satin and featured gorgeous detailing around the necklines and wrists.
Oh, and one of my favorite leotard designs – which has to be seen to be believed - is the knee-length leotard. That's right, ladies, they went knee-length! And oh so elegant, with layers of tulle flowing just below the knees!
I just have to confess – that knee-length leotard really caught my attention. And let me tell you, after experiencing how elegant, yet powerful, those ladies felt on stage, I can completely understand the fashion craze. It’s truly enchanting.
Dancing in the Heart of London’s Theatre DistrictAfter spending an afternoon browsing at London’s fanciest dancewear stores and chatting with the most stylish ladies of the theatre district, I decided to become the fashion for an evening.
You wouldn’t believe the crowds at Covent Garden! The stage was ablaze with sparkling costumes. There were long velvet gloves, feathery headbands, and stunning brooches. And of course, those enchanting, layered tutus – just like a cloud of pastel pink fluff!
After watching the dazzling ballet performance, I had to channel my inner Victorian diva and give a show of my own! My impromptu performance, right in the middle of London's busiest square, brought cheers and applause. There was a mix of surprise, excitement, and a bit of shock, but who doesn't love a good dose of surprise and whimsy?!
I left a trail of glittery pink confetti – after all, everyone knows that magic comes in all shapes, colors, and glitter – and even a little hint of "What exactly is she doing?" But everyone agrees – when you dance with passion, anything is possible!
Making the Past, PresentNow, I know what you’re thinking! "How can I rock these styles in modern day fashion?" Well, let’s get creative, ladies! Take those elegant details and put them on everything! Think blush satin blouses, lace-trimmed skirts, pastel-toned sweaters, and gorgeous ballet flats – for an effortlessly chic look.
As for the tutus? Remember, those Victorian ballerinas embraced layers! Why not we do the same? Pair a full skirt over a pair of black tights and a short-sleeved white top for a fun, stylish twist! Or add a delicate layer of tulle to your existing tutu for that vintage Victorian charm.
And lastly – let's talk colour! It’s not all about pink - but pink is most definitely in. Don’t be afraid to embrace pastel colours. I’m talking baby blues, creamy yellows, and delicate lavender – oh so romantic, just like the beautiful Victorian period! And hey, don't forget about pink – it’s a classic for a reason!
On the Next EpisodeBut my journey isn’t over! The magic of time travel keeps on swirling! Next month I'm headed to 1920s New York! Imagine - the dazzling jazz age, glamorous flapper dresses, and an all-new set of vintage fashion finds for you to drool over! Make sure you keep an eye on Pink-Tutu.com!
Until next month, my dears! Keep those tutus twirling! Remember, with every step, we celebrate the art of fashion and make it our own. And just like me, be sure to spread a bit of magic wherever you go! And maybe, just maybe, we can bring back the beauty of the Victorian era – one pink tutu at a time!
Much Love!Emma xxx
