Hello, darling readers! Emma here, your resident pink tutu aficionado, and welcome to another exciting edition of "Pink Tutu Travels"! This month, we're jetting back in time - not by plane, but in my oh-so-fabulous, time-travelling pink sparkling leotard, to the year 1899. It's an era brimming with style, creativity and oh, those delicious vintage leotard details!
My dearest readers, imagine this: cobblestone streets, gaslights flickering in the dusk, and the air buzzing with a sense of anticipation as a carriage pulls up to a theatre. It's a time when ballet was experiencing a real renaissance, and the stage costumes, you see, were divine.
You know how much I adore a show, right? But before we go down that theatrical rabbit hole, let's start with the leotards! They weren't exactly what we call a 'leotard' then - they were more akin to what we'd think of as a bodice, and weren't made to be seen. But my, they had a captivatingly historical appeal. You'd find lovely cotton or silk, sometimes adorned with lace and ribbon details - a whisper of Victorian romance. These bodices were worn with voluminous, beautifully layered tulle or chiffon skirts.
Speaking of tutus, those weren't commonplace yet, darling. They'd begun to make their way onto the stage in the 1890s - the first iterations were still quite long, trailing down to the ankle. Imagine! Whirl, twirl, swoosh! And it's quite fascinating to think how these first attempts at the tutu would go on to evolve into the whimsical and intricate creations we love today!
Now, imagine me waltzing into this historical setting, in my gloriously bright pink leotard - yes, I always travel in style - and catching some of the grand productions! You just have to believe in the magic of time travel and pink tutus!
While in 1899, you might catch an opera - remember my darling, that opera, like ballet, is all about the costumes! They often showcased spectacular outfits, inspired by classical tales and historical dramas, which must have been spectacular to witness. You'd be met with ornate designs and dramatic embellishments, showcasing a world of extravagant fabric choices and intricate patterns, making them veritable feats of artistic achievement.
Remember how I told you I love going to shows and street performances? Imagine watching the first ballets by the likes of Diaghilev, with those extraordinary set designs - they are said to have completely revolutionized the artistic style of theatre design. Just imagining the vibrant costumes, the expressive dance movements and those beautifully crafted sets would leave you speechless - pure magical artistry!
As for my leotard-loving adventures in 1899, you know I wouldn't just observe the scenery, right? Of course, I've been busy adding to my collection of vintage leotard inspiration! I found a charming shop in the heart of London, tucked away behind the beautiful Royal Opera House - swoon - it had the most delightful vintage fashion fabrics, beautiful ribbons and even some elegant lace that would perfectly match that Victorian-style bodice!
Imagine the stunning costumes they must have created in that era - truly a fashion icon's paradise!
Oh, before I go, I have a little treat for you all!
Do you know what day it is today? Well, it’s 10th October 1899, and on this very day, in 1899, the World’s Columbian Exposition closed in Chicago. Can you believe it?
It was quite the show, filled with innovations, fashion and glamour. I'm told there was even an area showcasing the beauty and elegance of Parisian fashion - a dazzling display of silk, lace and that chic, French style, darling! You can't get more fab than that!
Let’s travel together next month, readers! We’ll continue to unravel the enchanting story of leotards, explore more fashion highlights, and see where my magical pink tutu takes me next!
Until then, keep twirling, keep smiling, and don’t forget, a pink tutu always adds a dash of magic to any day.
Until then,
Emma xoxo
