Hello fellow fashionistas, welcome back to my pink tutu-infused time-travelling blog! Today, I'm taking you on a rather spectacular trip to the year 1901, specifically 8th August. I have to tell you, my lovely pink sparkly time-travelling leotard shimmered like a thousand diamonds, it was the perfect choice for a journey to such a delightfully stylish time.
Now, I know what you're thinking: what in the world was happening in the leotard scene back then? Was the tutus on fire? Were the leggings made of wool? (Honestly, I shuddered at the thought!).
Well, prepare to be amazed!
The Leotard Backstage: The Early Days of Ballet
First off, remember, this was well before the days of stretchy lycra, the miraculous fabric we love to love, and a very long way from the days of ballet fashion's global explosion on Instagram. Imagine a time when a leotard, the ultimate dance wear essential, was only worn on the stage and not on the street. (Goodness knows we'd never agree to such a situation!)
What leotards did exist in 1901 were mainly worn by ballet dancers, and trust me, these were real beauties. Think sleek, form-fitting styles made of satin or velvet. These leotards were all about showcasing the dancers’ beautiful shapes, highlighting their artistry and grace, something we still value today!
You won’t see tutus for the main event either. At this time, tutu fashion had yet to break out from the realm of the ‘classical tutu’ with layers of tulle and intricate detailing. And think, in those days the colour pink didn't take the world of fashion by storm as it has now.
Fashion Trends Back in the Day
Ladies, let's talk about that Victorian era! Big hoop skirts and blouses adorned with frills and lace were all the rage. While these styles certainly weren’t suited for dancing or the street fashion trend, it definitely did a lovely job of setting the stage for a dramatic and colourful change, especially when you see how it would pave the way for those decadent 20th-century looks we adore today!
Think about this: it was only 50 years later that the leotard revolution, powered by revolutionary synthetic fabrics and more inclusive designs, truly got its groove on. It seems crazy to think we only have to step back 50 years and it’s a very different world of fashion.
The Big Ballet News for August 1901
Remember, time-travelling isn’t always about finding the most extraordinary and decadent events! You never know, your greatest experiences can come in simple forms. For example, I traveled back to the Derbyshire Dales just a short distance from my time-travelling hideout to a special performance of The Sleeping Beauty. I had such a fabulous time, you guys!
Let's Get Social: What did You Think?
You all know how much I love a chat about my travels. So, what are your thoughts on the fashion and history of 1901? Did it surprise you? What's your favourite era to time travel through?
