Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another tale of fashion history! Buckle up, darling, because this month we're heading to the roaring era of 1902! Can you even imagine life without Netflix? Don't worry, I packed my portable gramophone, and you can just imagine the glorious tunes!
So, where did I go this month? Why, to the bustling streets of London, naturally! A time travelling ballerina wouldn't dream of missing a chance to experience the grandeur of Victorian theatre, with all its glitz, glam, and gasp-worthy gowns. And you betcha, leotard fashion was already showing some impressive moves!
My mission for this time travel? To find out about leotards on 5th May 1902, the same day as the Royal Opera House opening night - an event that made me dust off my most dazzlingly pink tutu, complete with a sparkling feather boa! (It was absolutely a struggle getting past the theatre’s grand doors without an invitation. Thank heavens for the wonders of time-traveler invisibility – a necessary skill to blend in amongst those dashing men in their monocles and fabulous ladies in their puffed-up sleeves!)
You see, back in 1902, the world of ballet was about to experience a transformation! We weren't quite ready for the free-flowing grace of the tutu styles we know and love today. Instead, picture those Victorian-inspired dance costumes – the dramatic, figure-hugging silhouettes with a generous sprinkling of ruffles and layers! The fabrics of choice were satin and silk, a luxurious combination that shimmered beautifully under the gaslight, reflecting all the romance of the age!
And you know what? This era wasn't all about the full-skirted gowns! While ballet dancers on the stage were still indulging in voluminous tutus, a change was in the air! The practicalities of 'exercise' - yes, dancing was now seen as an actual activity that needed the appropriate attire - was becoming paramount! Leotards began to appear - for men, in velvet or wool! Oh, the drama of that - I almost forgot my portable vintage camera for a moment! - and, of course, those glorious lace-trimmed leotards for women, designed to help those ladies move gracefully without those restrictive layers!
One of my favourite discoveries was the famous ballerina, Isadora Duncan! (Now, I have to admit, her dance style is not my cup of tea - the flowing, expressive style is so different from our structured ballets - but, hey, different is beautiful!) Isadora, the trailblazing dancer, took 'dress reform' for her artistic expressions very seriously. Her own brand of 'leotards' - if we can even call them that - were basically clinging tunics that were made from the most beautiful fabrics you could imagine, from silk chiffon to velvet to lightweight satin - and oh so flattering! She even donned some trousers now and then! What a rebellious, beautiful dancer!
The fashion was changing even then, my lovelies, just like a ballerina gracefully shifting across the stage. It wasn't a giant leap yet, but it was a graceful move. Even the simple little dance class had their leotards to keep their moves comfortable and beautiful!
So, in essence, I can already hear the cheers: this month’s time travel brought some incredible sartorial insights! It's a constant reminder that dance fashion, even all those years ago, was about beautiful movement, creativity, and self-expression - much like my personal quest to bring all those gorgeous shades of pink to everyone's wardrobes! (And to everyone who thinks a leotard is not an acceptable outfit for grocery shopping or attending that high tea at your favourite cafe - think again! Fashion is freedom!)
That's it for this month, dear friends! It's been a thrilling ride, full of sartorial delight and dance magic! Stay tuned for next month's adventures, when I’ll be sharing more fascinating facts about leotard history – just in time for our summer ballet series, in which I’ll be touring through the streets, showing everyone how we do the tango (don't worry, I'll be showing all those dashing men how it's done - I'm already shopping for a fabulous new black, velvet leotard!)
Remember, dear friends, if you feel like doing something glamorous, step into a pink tutu, let the music sweep you off your feet, and show the world how beautiful a tutu can make you feel. Remember, there's no time for sadness when a pink tutu is in your life. Until then, keep twirling!
