Hello my lovely tutu-loving darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, where we embark on enchanting journeys through time, exploring the fascinating evolution of leotard fashion. I'm Emma, your Derbyshire-born, tutu-obsessed blogger, and this month, we're stepping back to 2nd February, 1903, for a captivating glimpse into the world of leotard fashion as it was over a century ago. This is post number 530 for my travel blog, www.pink-tutu.com, so do keep checking back for more enchanting adventures through time!
My magical time travelling leotard has whisked me off on a whirlwind trip to the turn of the 20th century, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to share the exquisite styles I've unearthed with you all. The beauty of time travel is being able to appreciate how fashion evolves over time. Leotards in this era were definitely not as bold as what we're used to now!
The Victorian Legacy and a Whiff of Edwardian EleganceRemember, 1903 is a time when the Edwardian era was just taking shape, and you can see traces of Victorian sensibilities in leotard fashion. This era embraced form-fitting garments but kept a focus on practicality and grace. Think of ballet classes held in more private settings rather than the grand theatres of today.
Let's start with the Gymnastic Bodice, an essential staple for both women and men during this time. Think fitted bodice that provided freedom of movement for gymnastics and exercise. Imagine a delicate, smooth silhouette hugging the curves, possibly constructed from a silk satin with lace or embroidery details.
Now, for Ballet in 1903, the typical outfit wouldn't be complete without a tights and a flowing tulle skirt, which allowed for the fluid movement and grace required for balletic performances. The leotard, in a way, was less prominent, it's not the striking garment we see on stage now.
The Dance Costume - Where practicality meets Elegance:Picture the Leotard then. Made of smooth satin, and adorned with fine lace details and ribbons, perhaps featuring ruffles at the neckline and hem. Imagine the beautiful shade of lavender or a rich navy blue dancing under the stage lights! It's an entirely different kind of beauty, isn’t it?
Leotard Accessories of the TimeI can’t resist adding the accessories. They add an extra touch of charm and flair! Remember the gentle grace and subtle elegance of the time, the leotard is then complemented by delicate accessories like lace gloves, dainty bracelets, and satin ribbon belts adorned with delicate pendants or small, sparkling charms. The idea was to highlight femininity and create a timeless yet modest aesthetic.
London in 1903 - A Theatrical Wonderland! While I was there in 1903, I couldn't resist a trip to the theatre in London, of course! The grandeur of the time is fascinating.
Here’s what was happening in the London Theatre world - I even saw a performance:
- The Savoy Theatre: In 1903, this theatre, with its glittering exterior and a lavish interior, housed a new musical: “The Toreador,” which enjoyed its grand opening on 2nd February 1903! This musical comedy, complete with bright Spanish music and a romantic storyline, must have been a hit. You can imagine the dancing, the bright colors, and the beautiful costumes of the time. What a spectacle it must have been.
- The Coliseum: This opulent new theatre had only recently opened its doors and was already making waves with a captivating variety programme that included the great dancer, Maud Allan.
Maud Allan’s famous, daring style of dance and her bold approach to costumes were breaking new ground and creating controversy – the public couldn’t get enough of it! I can just imagine the electrifying performances of Maud Allan in 1903, She definitely brought the heat to the leotard game!
### Fashion Shopping on Bond Street
Naturally, I visited Bond Street to peek at the fashionable leotards and outfits of the time. Just imagine me in my pink tutu walking around those elegant shops and the looks I must have got from the elegant Edwardians! But no one can say I’m not daring!
While I love my sparkly pink tutu for my travels, my wanderings through Bond Street allowed me to envision how a Victorian lady might dress for a fancy ball or perhaps even a stage performance. It was such a fascinating juxtaposition between the grace and demure nature of that era and the modern dance trends we see today!
Bringing it back to the PresentSo, you see, 1903 may have been a different world for fashion but the importance of a beautiful leotard remains, The world of ballet and theatre, like everything else, moves with time and the history of this world is endlessly fascinating.
As for me, I'm eager to return to the magical future! You never know what future date I might pop into next month!
Until then, do remember my dear tutu-lovers - the right leotard, whether from a vintage store or one of your own finds, is waiting for you. Be brave! Be you! And wear pink! 💖
Happy tutu travels! xx
