Post #536: 1903 - The Dance of Fashion

Hello, darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu enthusiast, and welcome back to my monthly fashion escapade through time! It's been a whirl of tulle and twirls this month, so let's dive right in. August 8th, 1903 - a date forever etched in my pink leotard-wearing memory. That's when I donned my sparkling pink time travel suit and landed right in the middle of… well, the Belle Epoque! Imagine Parisian cafes abuzz with laughter, ladies in elaborate hats and trailing gowns, and gentlemen with charming mustaches - it was an absolute delight!

Now, fashion in 1903, you see, was all about a graceful, feminine silhouette. I wouldn't call it a "ballet" inspired look, but there were definite connections. Tight corsetry was still a bit of a must-have, but those iconic "S-bend" corsets (thank goodness they were less constricting than the previous ones!). A touch of Victorian elegance mixed with a touch of rebellion - it was a delightful blend.

The main players in the world of women's leotards during this time were mostly designed for active pursuits. Gymnastics, for instance, was blooming in popularity and so were these beautiful, sleek cotton leotards that offered freedom of movement - perfect for gymnastic routines and, you know, dancing in my pink tutu! The fashion designers weren't exactly clamoring to put leotards on the street just yet, but they did influence a more streamlined shape in women's fashion. It's as though the undergarment was gaining visibility, perhaps hinting at the dramatic shift in style that lay ahead!

This era saw the rise of "blouses" as the key statement pieces - silk, velvet, and lace in all kinds of elaborate, artistic styles. Just imagining them flowing under a beautiful dance-ready leotard gives me shivers! Of course, my mission here was to find out what these ladies wore under their stylish blouses and, thankfully, I found myself in the heart of London’s thriving textile district! Fabric shops burst with rich textures and colours. One even had a stash of the finest pink silk - perfect for a little tulle addition later, maybe? My time travel skills certainly paid off!

But no time travel adventure is complete without some local colour, is it? In those early 1900s, London was a world of contrast. I wandered through Covent Garden market - bustling with market stalls and street vendors, and then off to the plush stalls of the famous Oxford Street where the latest fashion was on display - corsets and long, full skirts were all the rage! I even managed to catch a stunning musical production featuring a full-length dance number with costumes of silks and satins, and those "S-bend" corsets, a sight that could give a modern day ballerina serious wardrobe envy! Let's just say my own "street ballet" routine in my sparkling pink tutu and the market crowds weren’t half as grand.

As a time traveller, I get to witness history, learn from it, and get inspiration for my next design! Oh, how I wish I could have a good chat with the lovely ladies who were beginning to move towards simpler, more functional outfits in this time period, as they paved the way for modern trends! But back to reality for me now - a million little pink twirls await as I get back to my current timeline. And to my fellow fashion enthusiasts, remember - always try to incorporate some colour and excitement into your looks! Who knows, maybe your next street performance in a fabulous pink tutu will inspire someone to take a step out of their comfort zone.

Until next month, darlings!
