Post #616: April 4th, 1910 – A Trip to the Edwardian Era with a Twist of Pink!

Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite Derbyshire ballerina blogger, Emma, here with a new entry for your monthly dose of leotard fashion travel – a whirl through time and a journey of a lifetime, all thanks to my shimmering pink time-traveling leotard!

This month, I found myself back in time, landed right in the heart of April 4th, 1910. This was an exciting trip, a time filled with exquisite fashion and a burgeoning spirit of modernity. The Edwardian Era, with its flowing lines, delicate lace, and a touch of romanticism, was all about elegance. Think corsets, puffed sleeves, and long, trailing skirts! And, to my surprise, while a traditional tutu might not have graced the stages of the time, a leotard-like garment was already starting to make its presence felt.

So, imagine this: a breezy springtime day. The air is buzzing with the sound of horse-drawn carriages, and I, with my swirling pink tulle tutu (how could I resist!) and my matching pink sparkly leotard, am causing quite a stir!

My first stop: The Palais de Danse in Paris. A grand ballroom with mirrored walls and ornate chandeliers, buzzing with lively chatter and music. The fashionable ladies, in their billowing gowns and feathered hats, were captivating. Now, let’s be honest, they weren’t quite sporting my ‘Emma’ signature style, but something incredible was happening here… The women were learning a new kind of dance! This new form – the "shimmy" and the “Charleston" - promised liberation with its daring, suggestive, moves. I imagined what a leotard, or even a tutu, could have done for them. This era of societal change was bringing in a new kind of femininity - one that moved with energy and spirit, an echo of the modern leotard's freedom of movement.

I was curious, so I wandered the bustling streets of Paris, stopping in the charming boutiques of the city. There, I discovered the very beginnings of 'gym leotards'. Now, you have to understand that the ladies back then weren't exactly sprinting through the streets. The fashionable ‘gym’ at this time meant “gentle exercise”, a movement toward graceful movement, and the garment reflected this. It was less athletic and more practical – an undergarment for ease of movement. They weren't made of nylon, stretchy materials, or the iconic, eye-catching designs we know and love today. These leotards, with their silken softness and simple designs, offered a different kind of beauty and were often worn under corsets and long skirts, a secret underneath, a symbol of movement.

Now, if I'm honest, it was a bit of a change for my pink tulle and sparkle leotard. In my travels through time, I’ve never had an entire 'tutu wardrobe'. But, darling, there was no denying the beauty and practicality of the leotard at its start. Just the glimpse of its form under that Parisian gown sparked so much creativity, and got me thinking: "How did leotard fashion, through the years, go from something so hidden to something so visible?"

Back in my present day, I was buzzing with excitement. My time in the Edwardian era, filled with the energy of change, gave me a whole new appreciation for the simple and practical nature of early leotard fashion. But more importantly, it underlined the power of leotards in reflecting societal change and, importantly, their ever-growing role in expression through fashion.

What could have been just another historic event was more for me, my dear reader, it was a spark of inspiration! The way the "shimmy" and "Charleston" revolutionised the way women moved opened up my imagination for leotard fashion in the present day! I can already envision leotard designs incorporating these elements! I'm absolutely itching to head back to my sewing machine and play with the concept of dance fashion that blends the past, the present, and my signature "Emma" twist!

Until next time, dear friends, keep those pink tutus at the ready, because as we navigate this world, leotard fashion is constantly in motion! Don't forget, your next dose of leotard fashion time travel is just around the corner! Keep your eyes on www.pink-tutu.com!
