Hello lovelies! It's your favourite pink tutu wearing, time travelling ballerina blogger Emma, back with another exciting adventure through the history of leotards! Today, we're heading back to January 1st, 1912 – a time of change, elegance, and oh-so-many interesting fashions. I was simply dying to see what the world of leotards was like then!
It's a funny thing about time travelling, you know? It doesn't matter where you go, you'll always find people passionate about fashion. In my experience, a love of fashion seems to be woven into the fabric of time itself. And with my own sparkling pink time travelling leotard, it’s a breeze to hop back and forth, exploring the threads of fashion throughout the ages.
January 1912, the world was just beginning to glimpse the changes that would shape the roaring 20s, and the dance world was no different. The Edwardian era was in full swing, with its elegance and sense of refined style. You might be picturing the quintessential corseted figures of the time, with tight waistlines and billowing skirts, but within the confines of the dance studios, a new silhouette was emerging – one that embraced freedom and movement!
I was particularly delighted to find that, even then, leotards were already taking centre stage! But the leotards of 1912 were much more structured than the free-flowing numbers we wear today. The trend was for longer, form-fitting garments, often made of silk or lightweight cotton, that fitted snugly to the body. They weren't meant to be flamboyant or attention-grabbing, but rather served to accentuate the dancer's body shape and highlight their graceful movements. It was almost as if the leotard had already realised its potential as a stage-worthy outfit – a canvas for dancers to express themselves through movement.
Of course, I couldn’t travel through time without stopping for a bit of ballet-themed retail therapy, so I made a beeline for a lovely dressmaker in London, where I stumbled upon a fascinating shop full of intricate ribbons, shimmering sequins and fabrics that whispered of Victorian charm. My, my, how it tempted me to swap my pink tutu for a long, flowing gown with a shimmering bodice, fit for a princess! I can already imagine myself waltzing across a ballroom floor in this gorgeous ensemble… but I shall leave that fantasy for another time travel adventure! 😉
After my shopping spree, I had a fabulous time experiencing the delights of a performance at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Imagine, a night of exquisite music, stunning scenery, and elegant dancers gliding across the stage, dressed in elegantly embroidered and beautifully tailored leotards that mirrored the intricate and opulent style of the time. It truly was an evening of pure magic. The light choreography allowed the performers’ movements to become the primary focal point, drawing the audience's attention to their expressive and fluid movements, all highlighted by their elegant leotards. The dance was a testament to the power of both movement and fashion.
Of course, a visit to London wouldn't be complete without a visit to one of the city’s numerous dance studios where I met the most delightful group of dancers practicing their ballet techniques in elegant yet modest attire. This, of course, led to a delightful exchange of insights, stories, and ideas about all things ballet and leotard related!
Before leaving this captivating moment in history, I discovered something rather wonderful, dear reader - I managed to score a vintage leotard! Made of exquisite silk and featuring stunning embroidery – it even boasted the most fetching ribbon tied around the neck. I just couldn't leave it behind! It's destined to join my own modest but exquisite collection.
So, what can we learn from this journey into 1912, you ask? For one, it is incredibly encouraging to see how even a century ago, leotards were already playing a key role in the world of dance. It is a piece of clothing that not only empowers movement but also creates a statement, even without a flamboyant array of colours. But it’s clear that the style and silhouette of leotards has evolved greatly – moving from long, graceful pieces to shorter, more dynamic designs. However, what truly resonates across all these periods is that the desire to express oneself through dance and fashion transcends the barriers of time!
