Pink Tutu Travels: Post #704 - A Glimpse of 1917 August 8th

Hello, my lovely Leotard Lovers! It’s Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood tutu enthusiast, back with another whirlwind of a time travel tale. This month, we’re stepping back to August 8th, 1917, and let me tell you, this particular day was positively buzzing with energy - a real heady mix of change and creativity, all swirled up with the excitement of the latest leotard trends!

This month's adventure kicked off in my familiar, shimmering, time-travelling pink leotard. This time, it had a little extra sparkle - something about the atmosphere of 1917 felt just a touch extra glitzy! And yes, the tutu? Of course! A vibrant pink masterpiece, layers upon layers of soft, tulle ruffles that twirled in a perfect harmony with my time travelling adventure.

My first stop was the heart of bustling London. I hopped into the scene near the bustling Covent Garden Theatre - the hub of theatrical brilliance and where the heart of ballet pulsed with vibrant energy. 1917, oh what a year! I can't even begin to describe the beautiful creations gracing the stage – think exquisite fabrics, meticulous details, and flowing lines that showcased every graceful move with a sense of magic. It was as though every piece had been crafted with passion and meticulous attention to detail.

There was a certain air of chic in the leotard trends. The prevailing design was all about practicality - think graceful, well-fitting, leotards which allowed the ballerinas freedom of movement and allowed the graceful silhouettes of the time to shine. This wasn’t the era of bare all, like we see now - leotards then were a clever balance of coverage and movement, an important aspect of performing arts design in the early 20th Century.

But, it wasn’t just about ballet. Oh no, the excitement for leotards extended beyond the theatre into a whole new dimension.

Did you know that this time period marked the beginning of the leotard’s journey towards fashion icon status? In a whirlwind of movement and excitement, the ‘Tutu' was finding its place in the world and finding its way into everything. Think colourful leotards used in gymnast routines, dancers in cabaret performances, and, oh how I loved seeing the daring street fashion of the day featuring leotards for dancing on the streets of Paris! Imagine, Parisian chic women, bold in their vibrant coloured leotards, ready for some fun dancing and enjoying the beautiful life on the streets of France. I had to snap so many pictures!

Of course, it’s impossible to mention the fashion scene without mentioning the vibrant “Flapper” dress. Yes, ladies, it's an icon of 1920's fashion but its history really starts in the later stages of the Great War. 1917 is where the Flapper dress got its first true legs, so to speak, and with this daring and rebellious dress came even more opportunities for leotard inspiration. This playful silhouette led to a lot of creativity with the use of colourful silks, and well-fitted shapes which perfectly lent themselves to dance, gymnastics and artistic performance. It’s so beautiful to see how ideas were exchanged between dancers and fashionable women - what a wonderful synergy!

Speaking of creativity, it wasn’t all glamour. We couldn’t ignore the challenging world happenings of 1917, which made my time travels extra special, and quite humbling. 1917, amidst a tumultuous war, fashion wasn't just about things, it was about the resilience of creativity. Even as people faced challenges in daily life, there was still a fervent desire for beauty, movement, and that sense of joy found in the joy of leotard dancing. There was this beautiful desire to use fashion to embrace individuality and find moments of joy, and to be expressive. In those challenging times, a simple but beautifully crafted leotard held a whole new world of artistic possibility!

*But the greatest treasure I found in 1917? It wasn't any single design or beautiful ballerina, but the spirit of leotards. It was that beautiful idea that leotards could help connect women to their emotions and creativity. *

This kind of feeling resonated with me as a street dancing ballerina. It felt deeply heartfelt, joyful, and filled me with an unashamed sense of unstoppable joy because this is my mission, my passion. My personal time travel adventure always leads back to my belief that the world is just waiting to wear a beautiful, sparkly pink tutu.

So ladies, my Leotard Lovers! Remember to channel that same kind of spirit in your own lives! Go for what makes you feel truly joyful. Be fearless in pursuing the creativity within! The next time you see a tutu or a beautifully crafted leotard, remember this tale of 1917 and its magical world of dance and creativity, where leotards were more than just fashion. It was the language of individuality - a symbol of grace, self-expression, and finding a moment of beauty in the world.

Until next time, dance, shimmer and twirl - always with the power of a beautiful, sparkly pink tutu!
