Pink Tutu Travels: #LeotardHistory 1918 04 April

Hello my gorgeous tutu-loving darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, your monthly dose of leotard history, fabulous fashion, and time-traveling adventures. This is your girl Emma here, straight from the beautiful Peak District in Derbyshire, where I've just finished twirling under the watchful gaze of the brooding hills. It's a crisp, clear morning here, perfect for practicing my pirouettes, and it's all the more perfect knowing that I have an absolute corker of a story for you all!

We're about to whisk you back in time, darlings. But don't worry, you won't be needing a delorean or a TARDIS, because I'll be taking you on my pink time-traveling journey – naturally in my shimmering pink, sequined leotard. We’re heading to the 4th of April 1918!

Remember this blog post number, #712 as it’s the latest in my #LeotardHistory blog posts for the Pink-Tutu.com website, a space for all things pink and tutu, especially in leotard fashion! Just to let you know I’m funding all my trips by busking in the street in my leotards and performing with my street ballet team, and my outfits are inspired by history! If you’d like to come and see us perform you'll need to contact my manager. Just let me know, and we can organise it all! We go wherever our sparkly pink shoes take us, but usually in my beloved Derbyshire!

Now back to this history lark. The world was in the throes of the Great War, or The First World War as some people prefer to say! A challenging and turbulent time for everyone. Can you even imagine how stressful that would be?!

Of course, my first mission in the past was to find a comfy spot for some shopping, darling. Leotard fashion never stood still! And thankfully for a ballet aficionado like me, 1918 was no exception. Now, imagine, darling: A beautiful and timeless era with a vintage leotard flavour. Picture this… graceful flowing lines, delicate details, perhaps some lace, maybe a dash of ribbon, with the kind of elegance that makes your heart flutter and say ā€œoh la laā€!

It would have been a dream, honestly! While not entirely unlike today, leotards of 1918 were made mostly from silks, wools, and chiffons. Now just imagine the sensation, the light movements of your chiffon dress-like leotard! The kind of leotard you wouldn't hesitate to dance with a bit more sass on the street in. I’d feel like an angel dancing through time.

I couldn't let my inner shopper go home empty-handed, darling! Now don’t tell anyone… but I nabbed a lovely silk one with a lace insert and some little rosettes, in pink of course – with the shop lady’s blessing! A few furtive glances around as I snuck it in my bag, to make sure no one thought I was a thief, then back in the time machine I was. But I’d like to thank you, kind lady. The pink will be perfectly fitting for my next show, with the girls in Derbyshire, at our usual dance location in a quaint cobblestone town market square.

Of course, there's so much more to 1918. A whole whirlwind of dancing and performance happening, though not always in pink! On the stage, darling! Let's think... Oh, I was treated to a splendid performance of The Sleeping Beauty. Imagine, all the grace and majesty, the swirling tutu-clad ballerinas dancing so enchantingly… I think I got quite lost in it, it was heavenly! There was such elegant choreography, a dance to evoke such beautiful imagery. They danced to perfection. So very inspiring, it’s always inspiring to see other ballerinas doing their thing. The music, darling? It was so rich and melodic, like the swirling swans from the ballet, but even better in person. That era was all about a different kind of stage presence, darling, they’ve gone to the dark side today and lost the beauty! You just didn't see anything quite like it, so fluid, a real show-stopper! A big ol' yes to classical ballet, and it always had me on the edge of my seat!

For me, that’s the joy of traveling through time, you get to experience the history of performance, the leotards, the ballerinas. There’s so much inspiration from other time eras, the outfits. You see, even through time travel you never get tired of watching all those wonderful performers and learning from the dances, all those incredible shows. The joy, the emotion, the elegance all expressed through the sheer, stunning power of movement. You truly realize just how amazing leotards can be. So magical.

Remember darlings, pink is power and you never have to give it up. Whether you love leotard fashion history, performing in a street dance show, catching the best in performances, it’s always a pleasure to share it all with you. For me, this trip was filled with pink tutus and historical beauty, so I truly recommend stepping back in time… maybe with a dash of pink. Oh, I just remembered a fab pink tulle tutu that I saw in one of the stores on my shopping spree that day – a timeless design for all eras and a little extra oooh la la!

Stay sparkly, stay fashionable and let’s keep that pink energy flowing!

Until next time! Emma xoxo

P.S. We'd love to hear all about your time travel adventures, especially your fav historical leotard or performance. Be sure to comment on Pink-Tutu.com. What do you think of my story?

Disclaimer: Emma encourages safe, responsible travel practices! Travel in your time machine may result in unexpected happenings… like having to hide in a shop when someone notices the leotard in your bag, like I had to do!
