Hello my dearest readers! Emma here, your favourite Derbyshire ballerina, and it's time for another exciting trip through the wonderful world of leotard history! Iām currently sporting a shimmering pink sequined leotard with a flowing chiffon skirt, perfect for a glamorous evening out in 1922. The worldās embracing the āflapperā look, and believe me, itās exciting!
This month, my magical leotard whisked me away to 12th December 1922 ā a date I was absolutely bursting to experience! It was the year that one of the most influential ballet companies in the world, the Ballets Russes, first took to the stage at the Alhambra Theatre in London! It was a legendary performance and made such a lasting impact on dance fashion that I simply had to see it for myself.
You know how much I adore watching ballet performances and my love for all things pink led me to the heart of London for this unforgettable evening. Now, 1922 saw the beginning of a new age of leotard styles! As dance fashion took inspiration from the dazzling Art Deco movement, ballet costumes embraced streamlined geometric patterns, bolder colours, and sleek, figure-hugging designs. You canāt get much more āflapperā than that!
The Ballets Russes performers looked simply stunning in their creations. I had to resist the urge to leap on stage and dance along ā believe me, it was hard! I could tell from the mesmerised audience, the whole night was just breathtaking. Itās so amazing to see the artistry and movement on display, the way the dancers seemed to fly across the stage, wearing those shimmering costumes ā pure magic!
The costumes for āLe Sacre du Printempsā were truly avant-garde and I must admit, even for me, the costumes for this performance were quite daring. Imagine a ballet dancer adorned with an abstract design, adorned with bold geometric patterns, showcasing a world where a modern, chic, minimalist style combined with the more classical style. Absolutely breathtaking. They certainly created a buzz in the world of dance fashion, and rightfully so!
Now, while the Ballets Russes were doing their thing at the Alhambra, let's talk about what else was hot in the world of dance fashion back then!
Leotard Trend of 1922:
Firstly, a little black leotard. These were the go-to, perfect for classes and casual dance outings. But it was more than just the basic black! This time period was bursting with bright colours ā emerald green, turquoise blue, fiery crimson ā anything bold and vibrant! Leotards also began embracing geometric patterns and abstract shapes, and the use of silk and velvet fabrics took the level of elegance to a whole new level.
Let's not forget the embellishments! I canāt get enough of rhinestones, sequins, and beads! You see these everywhere on those wonderful flapper leotards.
You see, back then, women wanted more freedom of movement! Leotards, now considered a cornerstone of dance fashion, were becoming a standard choice for everyone, from dancers and gymnasts to skaters and performers. It was during this period that leotards were designed for not just practicality, but for aesthetic beauty as well! It made dancing more appealing, and letās face it, just plain fun!

I wouldnāt have a problem now with a bright, playful, pink leotard. I simply love the shade, it embodies that spirit of playful adventure! The āflappersā did not hesitate to be playful and bold, after all!
