Hello my darling dance-aholics, welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! It's your girl Emma, and today we're taking a grand twirl through time, landing smack-dab in the middle of 1924. Oh, the joy, oh, the elegance! Grab your pinkest tutu, darling, and let's set off on this fashion adventure.
This is blog post number 785 for your lovely blogger, and I just can't believe it's been so long since I took my magical time-travelling leotard on a trip. Time certainly flies when you're twirling and dazzling, right? I've been busily twirling through the streets of Derbyshire, sharing my love of dance and dazzling the locals with my pink-tutu-tastic street performances. But today, my darlings, the time travel itch is too strong to ignore.
Now, let me tell you, my shimmering, pink leotard doesn't disappoint. I must confess, it gets quite a bit of attention, especially on these historical escapades! My mission: to see what amazing things are happening in the world of leotards back in 1924! I'm not just talking about those glorious dance garments – we're venturing into the world of theatre and ballet fashion, darling! The wonders!
Speaking of wonders, it's 5th May 1924 and boy, oh boy, do we have a treat! Today, my loves, the renowned ballerina, Anna Pavlova, is gracing the stage with her artistry at the Covent Garden Opera House in London. My darlings, imagine my joy! I just had to pop in for a quick look - it's a true testament to the evolution of the leotard through the years! You wouldn’t believe the dazzling costume, full of ruffles and delicate lace. It practically whispered 'dance!' I couldn't help myself and I found myself twirling in a pink-tutu trance on the Covent Garden balcony for a few hours! What can I say, I get caught up in the moment. 😉
Imagine, Anna Pavlova is wearing a garment designed by a little known fashion house called La Madelinette at this particular performance, and believe me, darling, it was nothing short of breathtaking. This is before the leotard evolved into a must-have garment in dance, you see! This is the world of dancewear that precedes Lycra, where satin, velvet, and beautiful silks reign supreme. You really have to imagine yourself as a ballerina in the days of vintage dance.
Imagine the joy of layering with layers of delicate, hand-stitched petticoats under the La Madelinette design on the elegant Pavlova. You simply wouldn't believe the attention to detail in these vintage pieces, it was nothing short of haute couture, a veritable spectacle!
Speaking of spectacular fashion, did you know, my darlings, that fashion back then was all about the glamour? This is a time of flappers and feathered boas. The Roaring Twenties are on! There's a touch of decadence in the air. Oh my darlings, can you imagine dancing to the Charleston in one of these vintage creations! And of course, I would be in my pink tutu, it's what I do best!
Imagine being on stage wearing that kind of exquisite detail with all those flounces and lace, and then moving onto the stage of your local theater to watch the actors grace the stage! Let’s hop over to London’s Theatreland! There is just something quite marvelous about seeing dancers on stage with the glorious leotards that fashion designers came up with for that age of performance. Oh, the artistry of a La Madelinette creation. If you have a look, just google La Madelinette. It was La Madelinette that made Anna Pavlova's creation, so make sure you get yourself acquainted with their work. It’s breathtaking. They create garments for ballet performances as well as for everyday wear. Can you believe it, my darlings? It seems fashion back then wasn't so far removed from the modern day, we just dress in a different kind of way now. I can't get enough of all the lace, the feather boas and the elegant hats that were the fashion of the time! My love for these periods never dies down! What is there not to love? I could quite easily live in these times!
Back to the theater. It was so fascinating to walk in on the theatre and watch the performance from a side entrance and it’s like stepping into another world. And imagine the fashion. Every one so chic, all the wonderful flappers in their sparkling dresses. If you love fashion, the early 20th century really has so much to offer. This is a world of stunning feathered boas, stylish hats, flappers with bobs in the shape of the 'it' girls of the time like Louise Brooks with her stylish look.
This isn't the only date for your dance diary! Across the ocean in New York City, the Ziegfeld Follies is showing at the New Amsterdam Theatre. If there was one show to attend on your list of theatrical visits, this would be the show you’d be going to on a visit back to 1924. It's pure cabaret glamour at its best, my darling. And guess what else is a big hit, my dears, they're sporting stunning, glittering leotards!
And wouldn’t you know it? 1924 has so much more to offer. On the 13th May, the iconic ballet performance Scheherazade opened in the legendary Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Talk about historical grandeur! My dears, can you imagine? Another must-see on the dance list! It was just breathtaking to watch, a complete dance spectacular that leaves you wanting more and more and, believe me, I was completely swept away.
And we're not done with our 1924 dance adventures just yet. On the 26th of May, my darlings, another iconic show comes to London! The Blue Train! Another theatrical extravaganza with a touch of vintage glamor - so quintessentially 1920s! It's a real celebration of fashion and entertainment. This isn't just a show. It's a journey! And who knows what sort of gorgeous leotards you might encounter! You’d be missing out if you didn’t make a trip, dear!
So as you see my darling fashion fans, you need to add a twirling jaunt through history to your 'to do' list. Come join me. The world is waiting. This is the joy of time travel! Who knows, one day you might be dancing with me and the legendary Anna Pavlova! My aim in life? It’s a simple one - to make the world wear pink tutus.
Catch you soon my loves.
