Post #821: 5th May 1927 – Leotard Love in the Jazz Age!

Hello my darlings,

Welcome back to another time-travelling adventure on the ever-fabulous Pink Tutu! This month, we’re whizzing back to 5th May 1927, the heart of the Roaring Twenties!

I can already feel the Charleston beat coursing through my pink tutu as I step off my magical time machine. Just imagine – flapper dresses, bobbed hair, jazz music, and of course, some spectacular leotard action! I have a feeling this trip is going to be one for the books!

Now, my dear readers, I know what you're thinking: “Pink tutu in the roaring 20s? Emma, are you sure that's a good idea?!” But let's be honest, a little pink never hurts! After all, isn’t pink the colour of fabulousness?

As I twirl into the city, I can feel the buzz of the jazz age, the energy is contagious! There’s a new world of fashion being created around me – streamlined silhouettes, bold colours, and an emphasis on comfort and practicality. Oh, how I long for that beautiful silk charmeuse slip dress!

A Spotlight on Leotards: From The Stage To The Streets

Naturally, I couldn't resist checking in with the leotard scene in 1927. It’s fascinating how the leotard is beginning to break free from the constraints of the dance world. As fashion progresses, practicality takes the lead and it is the perfect example of the era. The designs are still grounded in function – imagine a streamlined, sleeveless leotard made of stretchy knit, perhaps in a colour that's as bold and daring as the women of the age! These were worn as base layers, and the popularity of swimming, too, contributed to this trend. It wouldn't be until a few years later that the ballet-inspired form of the leotard would become the stylish trendsetter for women.

It seems that leotards weren’t only being embraced on stage but also on the street! Imagine the sight of dancers on Broadway and on London's West End performing in leotards in a symphony of beautiful motion, it really is the best! Just like our time, leotard fashions are definitely transcending the boundaries of the stage, and spilling onto the streets. They are an effortless statement piece, practical for the daily commute to the office, perfect for that tea at Claridge's, or a day spent galavanting in London!

Time Travelling to the Theatres

Of course, no journey into the past is complete without catching a show. I'm simply thrilled to be taking in some of the fantastic entertainment of the time! I'm talking everything from ballet and operetta to vaudeville and cabaret, which was all the rage in the UK and America.

Speaking of ballet, imagine the artistry and beauty of Anna Pavlova, the renowned Russian ballerina who danced at the London Coliseum. Watching her pirouettes and jumps would have left any ballet fan absolutely enthralled.

I am also a massive fan of operetta – it was a big hit in 1927, think beautiful melodies, captivating storylines, and perhaps, just perhaps, even a daring ballerina who graces the stage in a glamorous leotard – think swirling skirts and dramatic flair. Can you imagine? My inner diva is just screaming!

But let’s not forget those fabulous cabaret shows, complete with sequins and feather boas. There was a spirit of freedom and audacity that infused the art of that era. And I wouldn't be surprised if, amidst the jazzy music and the vivacious performances, there was a showgirl sporting a dazzling leotard, making her way to the stage.
