Pink Tutu Travels: 5th May 1932 - A Blast From The Ballet Past! (Blog Post #881)

Hello my lovely readers, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! This month, my magical pink leotard whisked me back to the 5th of May, 1932. It was a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era of dance, fashion and glamour! Now, grab a cuppa, settle in, and let's take a twirl through time together…

Remember my dearest readers, I strive to live by the mantra "More Pink Tutues for the World!” Every month I journey through time, searching for the most beautiful, captivating and inspiring leotards. And trust me, 1932 didn’t disappoint!

Stepping Back in Time: A Dance with the Past

Landing in a vibrant, bustling London, I was immediately caught up in the excitement. It was the height of the Depression, yet there was an incredible sense of optimism. The theatre scene was booming - everyone was escaping reality through dance and drama. And oh, the fashion! It was a glamorous mix of Art Deco designs and classic silhouettes. The air crackled with the anticipation of the newest shows and the whispers of fashion trends.

The Leotard in 1932: Simplicity Meets Elegance

Stepping into a quaint dance studio, I was met with a ballet class, and a fascinating view into leotard design in 1932! The ballerinas wore leotards in shades of taupe, grey and black, beautifully designed with long sleeves and simple lines. Think fitted bodice, cinched waist and an elegant calf-length silhouette, perfect for highlighting every fluid movement. The leotard itself was the star, the beauty of the ballerina's body and her movement being emphasised, rather than distracting details. A touch of vibrant pink in a headband or hair ribbon added a delicate hint of colour. It was a far cry from the colourful and embellished leotards we see today, but they spoke of a different kind of beauty, one that relied on understated grace and precision.

The Art of Simplicity: A World Beyond Ballet

Let's take a little peek into the fashion trends for leotards in 1932! Beyond the dance world, leotards found themselves taking centre stage in athletic wear, with simplicity and functionality being key. I saw leotards crafted in comfortable fabrics, suitable for gym sessions, yoga routines and even as casual, yet sophisticated underwear! But you see, it wasn’t about being outlandishly vibrant. This time period cherished the allure of simplicity, and the leotard was an elegant reflection of that.

My Performance: A Touch of Pink Amidst the Greyscale

Now, wouldn’t you know it, a spontaneous flash mob performance of my favourite choreographed number “Tutu Time!” amidst the bustle of London’s Piccadilly Circus, led to quite a delightful turn of events! The greyscale London seemed to positively blossom as the people gathered round mesmerized, and a little girl approached me, a twinkle in her eye. She'd never seen such a thing, not a pink tutu twirling around Piccadilly Circus, she exclaimed! I handed her a pink feather boa from my travel bag. Her face beamed bright, a joyous reminder why I love time traveling: To share the love for tutus with the world! The streets pulsed with a newfound energy as passers-by looked at one another, and even started to dance!

Catching a Show: Glamour and Sparkle

Being in London in 1932 meant savouring the delights of the West End, and the vibrant theatre culture. That evening, I secured tickets to the spectacular “As Thousands Cheer!” - a musical featuring songs, dances and scenes from Broadway’s most beloved shows! Imagine - lavish costumes and choreographed routines that would have sent every ballerina into rapturous applause, not to mention myself! And the show’s lead actress? Sporting a sparkling silver leotard. It shimmered under the stage lights, casting a mesmerizing effect onto the audience. Simply breathtaking!

1932 – A Timeless Era of Grace

Now, before we close for today, I do want to share a final thought about the leotards of this era: Though a stark contrast to today’s more expressive and often whimsical styles, there is an inherent beauty and elegant timelessness that shines through. This is the charm of leotard fashion in 1932! It was a statement about the elegance of the female form, a reflection of the strength and femininity.

I bid you farewell my dears, and I shall catch up with you in the next instalment of "Pink Tutu Travels!” Until then, stay vibrant and remember, never lose your love for dancing! *The "Dancing Dream" (Choreographed by Emma) *

(Music: A waltz)

Part 1: The Dreamers

  • Begin by taking a deep breath, stepping into your favorite tutu, feel that graceful movement of the fabric, and feel like a dancer.
  • Now stand gracefully and focus on that one spot that draws you to dancing, whether it be a place or a dream,
  • The waltz starts - take that one step, glide forward and begin circling with the flow of the music.

    Part 2: Twirling into Reality

    • Now the music is becoming faster, let’s take those elevated leg steps - you’re going to have a grand time here, but keep that grace, remember what those 1932 ballerinas showed us!
    • As you're twirling, start using your arm and hand movements for added emphasis on every turn, imagine that the air itself is helping you take flight.

Part 3: Dreamers unite

  • As the music reaches the climax the waltz, think of the most magical pink leotard in your imagination and let it flow onto the tutu as you gracefully dance.
  • End with your graceful twirl, taking a small bow, and letting that imagination stay with you as you step off the dance floor and into your life.

Happy dancing!

Until next time my beautiful readers, keep those tutus flowing, keep those spirits vibrant!

Much love and many happy twirls,

Emma.
