Post Number 885: A September Day in 1932: Twirling Through the Twenties

Hello darlings, welcome back to my little corner of the internet! It's Emma here, your pink-tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you off on another fabulous journey through the fascinating world of leotard history!

This month, my sparkly pink leotard and I have taken a little trip back to the 1930s - specifically, September 9th, 1932, a date that, believe it or not, holds some hidden gems in the world of dancewear fashion.

Let's rewind the clock, shall we?

Stepping into the Roaring Twenties...and a Little Bit Beyond

Picture it: the world's buzzing with new inventions, jazz is sweeping across the globe, and everyone's sporting shorter skirts, sleek bobs, and those glorious flapper dresses. Oh, and don't forget the fabulous leotards!

But hold your horses, lovelies. 1932 was more than just a continuation of the roaring twenties. This was the era of art deco, sleek lines, and a certain sophistication creeping into fashion, which transferred over to the world of leotard fashion, too!

This, dear readers, is what makes 1932 a truly magical year for the dance enthusiast. While the vibrant colours of the 1920s remained popular, they were now paired with a newfound sleekness and elegance.

Think long, flowing leotards in silky satin with a graceful V-neckline. Or perhaps, a fitted bodice in shimmering lurex, cinched at the waist for a feminine silhouette. Even the fabric choices began to shift from cotton and wool to silks and rayons. A little bit of sophistication goes a long way, wouldn't you agree?

Where to Find This Leotard Magic:

This decade saw the rise of several notable dancewear shops, some of which are still in existence today. London's West End was bustling with studios and retailers, like Madame A.D. Dusseaux’s ‘Dance Supplies Ltd’, who were catering to both aspiring ballerinas and those just beginning their dance journey. And of course, there were the more prominent shops on Regent Street and Oxford Street, where those with deeper pockets could find the finest leotards from around the globe.

My Personal Observations on 1932 Leotard Fashion:

I had the most incredible time during my trip! Walking through the streets of London, it felt like every shop window showcased some glorious new dancewear creation. From the classic 'V-back' designs to those with long, billowing sleeves, every leotard exuded grace and poise.

Even the colours were incredibly sophisticated! While my beloved pink was definitely still around, you would find it paired with elegant ivory or a classic charcoal grey. The colours weren't overwhelming but rather refined and graceful, reflecting the overall spirit of the times.

My Dance Performance - Sharing a Little Ballet Magic!

As I often do, I made time for a little impromptu street ballet performance to fund my travels. The atmosphere was electric - the city seemed to hum with energy, and I could feel eyes following me as I twirled my way through the bustling crowds. It wasn't just the leotard; it was the entire energy, the vibrant spirit that seemed to permeate the air.

A kind gentleman, a retired stage performer I discovered, offered to share some of his leotard collection with me after my show! What a thrill - it’s not every day that you get to witness the evolution of dancewear fashion from a person who has been through it! He gave me an incredible vintage ballet leotard from the late 1920s – what a gift!

Beyond the Leotard: Performances that Filled the Heart

But, as always, my journey is not just about the leotard itself. It's about experiencing the magic of the times. During my time in London, I took in a show at the Coliseum. It was a production of ‘Giselle’, one of my absolute favourite ballets. It was magical, filled with so much beauty and grace!

As a ballet aficionado, I was absolutely thrilled to see how the performers of 1932 wore their leotards. They embraced the sleek designs with such elegance and precision, using the fabric and the movement to create stunning and ethereal performances that took my breath away.

The World Beyond the British Isles

And London wasn't the only hotbed of leotard magic in 1932. I ventured to Paris for a bit, and the spirit of elegance was palpable! The ateliers in the French capital were buzzing with creativity. And it's not just the design that captivated me; the materials themselves felt like a dream. From delicate silks to luxurious velvets, the Parisians were embracing quality and beauty in their dancewear just as they were in their everyday clothing!
